CSIR-IHBT Annual Report 2010-11CLARY SAGE (Salvia sclarea)It is one of the most importantaromatic plants cultivatedworldwide as a source of essentialoils. The effect of irradiance stressand plant geometry on oil contentwas studied. Oil yield was higher inthe open as compared to 25-75%shade (Fig. 31). Flower yield wasobserved to be significantly higherat 30x30 cm 2 spacing but theoil content was not significantlyaffected.Fig. 31 Effect of shade on oil content (%) and yield of S. sclareaIn a separate study, a leaf area estimation allometric model was developed using linear measurementsof leaf length (L) and maximum width (W). A linear model having LW as the independent variable(y=-3.4444+0.729LW) provided the most accurate estimation (R 2 =0.9904, RMSE=7.05) ofleaf area (Fig. 32). Further, validation of the regression model by using the data from anotherexperiment showed that the correlation between measured and predicted values was very high(R 2 =0.9858, RMSE=10.38).Fig. 32 Validation of the actual vs predicted values of single leaf area35
