CSIR-<strong>IHBT</strong> <strong>Annual</strong> <strong>Report</strong> 2010-11The essential oil composition of leaves and stems was determined for the first time. trans-Caryophyllene, humulene, nerolidol and spathulenol were identified as the major constituents.A commercial plant of 300 kg/day capacity to process dry leaves was installed, commissioned andhanded over to M/s Jallan Trinitea Processing Pvt. Ltd., Gurgaon. A total of 89 batches of 50 kgeach were processed. Total steviol glycosides of 402.52 kg were produced from 4450 kg of dryleaves with an average yield of 9% (w/w).SAFFRON (Crocus sativus)Saffron is an expensive spice used for flavoring and coloring foods. Two marker compounds,Crocin-1 and 2 were isolated from aqueous extract of dried stigma and analysed by HPLC.The growth performance of in vitro cormlets and in vivo corms produced at <strong>IHBT</strong> was evaluatedat saffron research centre, Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agriculture Sciences and Technology,Kashmir (SKUAST-K) (Fig. 49).
