George <strong>Howell</strong> (1749/50-1829) was a son <strong>of</strong> David <strong>Howell</strong> <strong>of</strong> Indian Island,town <strong>of</strong> Southold, Long Island. He died in the town <strong>of</strong> Hector, then inTompkins Co. N. Y. Hector was one <strong>of</strong> the original towns <strong>of</strong> the MilitaryTract awarded after the War <strong>of</strong> the Revolution to certain soldiers for service,In 1802 Hector became part <strong>of</strong> Seneca County (earlier having been in Cayugaand before that in Onondaga County) In 1817 it was made part <strong>of</strong> the newlyformed Tompkins County and in 1854 went with the territory forming presentSchuyler County. Therefor Hector's land and census records are found infive different Courthouses.At the time <strong>of</strong> the War <strong>of</strong> the Revolution, George <strong>Howell</strong> was living inWarwick, Orange County. He served in the 4th Orange Co. Militia underMajor John Hathorn. After the close <strong>of</strong> the War he removed with his familyprobably first to Newburgh, then to Delaware County where some <strong>of</strong> hischildren were born. By 1802 he was in Genoa, Cayuga County and from thatplace he shortly moved to Hector, Seneca Co, N. Y. where he settled near thePresbyterian Church formed in 1809.The locality around this Church was called Peach Orchard a translation<strong>of</strong> the Indian name <strong>of</strong> the place. George and Eunice <strong>Howell</strong> were early members<strong>of</strong> this congregation and here, in the yard <strong>of</strong> this Church they wereburied and here their stones are yet standing."George <strong>Howell</strong> died April 29, 1829 aged 79 yearsEunice wife <strong>of</strong> George <strong>Howell</strong> died March 9, 1835 aged 74 years and 4 months"The house which George <strong>Howell</strong> built was about two miles from the Churchtoward the east and up a steep hill. It was just north (on the west side <strong>of</strong>the road) <strong>of</strong> the corners now called Logan. When this house burned about1930, the family Bible was destroyed. However many years before SidneyB. <strong>Howell</strong>, a grandson, <strong>of</strong> Painted Post, N. Y. had copied the record <strong>of</strong> thefamily <strong>of</strong> George <strong>Howell</strong> into his own Bible, marking it "copied from grandfather'sBible" This reads:"George <strong>Howell</strong> married Eunice HortonBirthsBenjamin born October 1, 1776 in Orange CountyLucinda born December 11, 1778Sally born September 27, 1781Mehitable born August 24, 1783William born September 21, 1785 died April 17, 1839Anna born September 21, 1787Jemima born April 6, 1790 died May 15, 182&Fanny born July 9, 1792Jeremiah born December 4, 1793Hannah born August 31, 1796George born February 7, 1802Eliza born August 27, 1807Samuel born July 7, 1810 "Written on the same page by Sidney B. <strong>Howell</strong> is found: "George <strong>Howell</strong>, son<strong>of</strong> David was probably born in Southold.
