However there is no record showing he ever lived there. In 1825 heremoved from Hector to West Hill, between Elmira & Big Flats in ChemungCo. then in Tioga Co. N. Y.West Hill is the name locally used for the part nearest to Elmira <strong>of</strong> agroup <strong>of</strong> hills whose three corners are Elmira to the southeast, Horseheads tothe north and Big Flats to the northwest with the Chemung River on the south.In 1852 when the Rhea & Tremble wall map <strong>of</strong> Chemung County was made, thehighest part was designated Hawes Hill. This at a later time was the site <strong>of</strong>Harris Hill Glider Field, Harris being the name <strong>of</strong> an early settler there.West Hill is not as high as Harris Hill and overlooks Elmira rather than BigFlats and the Chemung River. In 1822 this area became part <strong>of</strong> the town <strong>of</strong>Big Flats when that town was set <strong>of</strong>f from Elmira.Jeremiah I1.owell's house on West Hill was probably built about 1825. Itwas smaller than his father's house in Hector but styled much the same, thelarger part having its gable and toward the road and a low story and half wingbuilt at right angles to the larger two story part <strong>of</strong> the house; an architecturalstyle <strong>of</strong>ten used at this time in central N. Y.The members <strong>of</strong> Jeremiah's family attended the Presbyterian Church inElmira. A record <strong>of</strong> the texts <strong>of</strong> sermons heard there and notations <strong>of</strong>relatives who visited Jeremiah <strong>Howell</strong>'s hospitable home on West Hill are tobe found in a diary kept from 1849 through 1854 by Sarah a daughter who latermarried Artemus Mills <strong>of</strong> West Hill.
