You will soon noticethat your mediven compression stocking is good for you and yourwell-being, and that it is improving your whole quality of life.Graduated Compression HosieryThe concept of graduated compression hosiery is such that hosieryshould be knitted to apply an ever decreasing pressure from the ankleto the thigh, or in the case of below knee hosiery from the ankle to theknee. The degree of this graduation is laid down in the RAL standard orHohenstein tested hosiery and British Standard BS 6612:1985. Thereare slight differences between the graduation requirements on the twospecifications and this is illustrated in the two diagrams below.Essentially it is whether the first specified graduation point (70%) ispoint “d” as in the RAL Standard (German) or point “c” in BS 6612:1985.The British Standard has different pressure graduation for garmentsbelow 19 mmHg at the ankle. The medical concept behind graduation issuch that the reducing pressure from the ankle to the thigh encouragesthe return of blood to the heart and lymph to the lymphnodes. This isundoubtedly true in the horizontal leg. When the patient stands andwalks other forces come into effect which are much greater than thepressures applied by the stocking, thus the concept of eliminating anyrestriction at the top of the stocking applies.
