Arm & ShoulderWILMER ® Carrying Orthosis1Features and BenefitsThe WILMER® carrying orthosis has been designed for people having apartly or completely paralyzed arm caused by a plexus cervicobrachialislesion or a brain deficit, for instance caused by a cerebrovascular accident.In these cases mostly the nerves which innervate the shoulder muscleshave been damaged. This causes the complete weight of the arm to behanging from the passive structures within the shoulder region. A chronicload of this nature in time results in subluxation of the shoulder joint, causinga lot of discomfort and pain. Additionally, since the muscles of the arm areno longer active, problems of oedema in the forearm and hand arise. Insituations of shoulder subluxation the application of the sling or hemislingmay result in unloading of the passive shoulder structures. However, thesedevices are not able to eliminate the subluxation, since they can not applyan upward force which is necessary for subluxation neutralization. Additionaldrawbacks of the sling and hemisling are the necessity of wearing themabove the clothing and the limitation of arm mobility.The WILMER® carrying orthosis obviates the stated drawbacks of the slingand the hemisling. The WILMER® carrying orthosis supports the forearmat a place near the elbow, in this way causing the weight of the forearm tobe slightly in unbalance with the weight of the upper arm, thus creating anupward movement of the upper arm resulting in subluxation neutralization.The WILMER® carrying orthosis does not load the neck, can be wornunderneath the clothing and only minimally obstructs arm mobility.
