Theorthosis is one of a group of orthoses known as dynamic elastomeric fabric orthoses (DEFO). The orthoses can improve functionalabilities and posture, combining compression of the body or limbs with directive forces, designed to meet individual needs andobjectives. Each orthosis is custom made, using a Lycra based fabric to achieve a close fit. The DMO® stimulates the somatosensory systemthrough the proprioceptors of the skin and musculoskeletal systems, and leads to postural adjustments, greater body awarenessand muscle action. The resistance created by additional layers of reinforcing material adds a biomechanical influence, to improveposture and further encourage movement control. As well as improved function from better posture, improved proximal / distal stability and reduced involuntary movements; otherbenefits may include pain relief, decreased associated reactions, easier transfers and improved therapy sessions. Over time,in most cases, the desired effect would be to experience a “carry over effect”, where the improvement in function and control ofmovement is continued in the long term when the orthosis is removed. The onset of this carry-over effect and the factors affecting its duration is dependent on the individual patients’ presentation andreaction to the treatment. Therefore the length of time required can range from months to years dependent on clinical presentation. The orthoses include:• Gloves for improved hand / upper limb function• Shoulder stability orthoses to enable repositioning of subluxed shoulders• Full body suit for whole body involvement• Shorts to stabilise the hips• Leggings to stabilise the hips and legs• Socks to improve foot position and swing throughThe style and design of the orthosis is based on the wearers’ ability and their functional objectives at the time of assessment. AnOrthotist and/or Therapist assess, measures, fits and reviews each orthosis.Patients with neurological dysfunction (including cerebral palsy, stroke (CVA), head injury, multiple sclerosis), scoliosis (includingneurological onset and idiopathic) and other movement disorders may benefit from wearing a Dynamic Movement Orthosis.Compliance is an essential part of this treatment both for those wearing the Dynamic Movement Orthoses and those caring for thewearer - i.e. parents, carers, teachers, and therapists. Without acceptance of the daily regime of donning and doffing the orthosis, treatment will not work.1112131415Please contact Customer Services for full details of this product range.208Telephone: 0845 6000 330 | Email: <strong>Solutions</strong>@rslsteeper.com
