The WILMER elbow orthosis which also is referred to as adynamic flexion orthosis, restores elbow function to a substantial degree.The WILMER elbow orthosis can be immobilized in two positions; it canbe locked in a horizontal position ie. deviating 90° from the stretched armand it can be locked in a position deivating 35° from the stretched arm. Inthe 90° locked position, the elbow orthosis can be loaded from above byweights of up to 3kg (30N). In the 35° locked position the elbow orthosiscan be loaded from below with forces up to 30N. The locking mechanismcan be disconnected by pulling the cable which runs through the forearmtubing to enable free motion of the forearm, a feature necessary when forinstance driving a car, thus preventing the elbow orthosis to become lockedin hazardous situations.The horizontal or 90° position can easily be reached by abduction of theupper arm of approximately 30°. Without orthosis flexion of the forearmonly occurs at abduction angles of approximately 90°. The elbow orthosisincorporates a spring which facilitates the reduction in abduction angle.Abduction of the forearm can also be achieved by an anteflexion pulse (quickmovement of the shoulder to the back and to the front).The WILMER elbow orthosis is invisible to wear underneath the clothing atthe medial side of the arm. The tilting interfaces between the orthosis andthe arm ensure optimal force distribution. The interfaces are perforatedwhich reduces skin and perspiration problems.
