36 A Tutor’s Guide to Teaching and Learning at UQ♦♦Enrichment of the on-campus learning experience through self-directed learningresources, advanced computer and communication skills, working in teams,email and discussion groups.Access to high quality education for students who are unable to attend classesand tutorials on-campus.A useful way of thinking about the internet for education is as a ‘tool’. A tool that canbe used to support the learning objectives that have been set for your course and assiststudents gain the skills and knowledge they require to successfully complete theassessment tasks.As with any tool, there are times when using the internet may not be the mostappropriate means of supporting learners. Online learning may not be appropriate forcircumstances such as practicing laboratory or motor skills, laboratory experiments andmanual handling techniques. There are also a number of myths around the internet thatare important to be aware of. For example the internet is:o Not necessarily cheaper than face-to-face teaching.o Not less work intensive than face-to-face teaching (it can be more).o Not practical or effective for all situations.o Not effective educationally as an information delivery mechanism only.As a tutor you may be required to undertake duties that are associated with onlineteaching and learning. It is important that you prepare yourself for this role.Managing eLearning effectivelyKnowing a little about how to manage eLearning will assist you to become an effectiveonline tutor. You will need to check that you:√√√√√√√√Are prepared for the roleKnow how to manage student expectations onlineAre familiar with ‘Netiquette’, ‘Emoticons’ & online lingoAre aware of the different kinds of online communication mechanismsKnow how to facilitate discussions onlineKnow something about assessment & evaluation onlineKnow a few survival tips and tricksAre familiar with where students can get training on how to use onlineresources
Section 4: eLearning 37The following sub-sections will assist you with these points so that you can manageeLearning more effectively.Preparing for the role of online tutorIt is likely that your involvement in eLearning will take the form of participating in acourse website using the communication tools. Prior to taking on this responsibility it isadvisable that you attend to the following checklist:Checklist for tutors preparing for a role on the course websiteDiscuss the purpose and features of the site and your role andresponsibilities with the course coordinator.Locate any appropriate help desk numbers that you may require (eg.for student log in problems).Organise computer and internet access for the periods you and yourstudents will require.Organise any passwords that may be required.Read HUPP policy 6.10.1 Internet Code of Practice & HUPP policy3.40.4 Private Access to Computers by Students and bring this to theattention of students.Peruse the course site and its features (including online help) andclarify anything that you are unsure about with your coursecoordinator.Undertake any training (technical and educational) that may assist youwith your role.
