The Annual Regis College Cape Cod
Summer Luncheon took place on July
29, 2010, at the Coonamessett Inn,
located in Falmouth, MA. Dr. Mary E.
Chamberland, Class of 1974, was the
guest speaker. She had received her
MD degree in 1979 and her master’s
in Public Health in 1982. She discussed
the U.S. Centers for Disease
Control, the Health Protection Agency,
and the World Health Organization.
This was most interesting and informative
news of her career and accomplishments.
From the Class of 1945,
only Philomene Winchester Murphy
and I attended, but we thoroughly
enjoyed the afternoon. Also, Barbara
Clancy, Director of Alumni Relations,
deserves another round of applause
for the major part she played in running
the luncheon. ¶ If you have any
news, no matter how minor, please
drop me a note. Girls of 1945 Class,
stay healthy and happy!
¶ Our class has had a very active
summer season. At the annual Regis
College Cape Cod Luncheon, the class
was well represented when President
Mary Jane England shared the good
news of increasing enrollment in the
freshman class. Coonamessett Inn
offered a delightful setting for the
140 alumnae and friends to mix and
mingle. Representing the Class of ’47
were class president Gertrude Breen
Alfredson, Jean Curran, Mary Reddican
McEttrick, Alice Dunbar O’Halloran,
and Louise McInernery Ryder. Also
this summer, Phyllis Gallinelli Campell
hosted a ladies’ lunch in Marshfield
for Gertrude Alfredson, S. Dorothy
McKenzie, Alice O’Halloran, and Jeanne
McDonough Cronin. Dot reported
to those gathered about the grand
adventures she had during her summer
visit to the St. Joseph’s community
beach house in Cohasset. We
hear that classmate Joan Moynaugh,
who has been “artist in residence” in
Ohio, plans to return to the Bay State
sometime soon. We look forward to
reconnecting! We also heard Catherine
Pattavina was among the participants
at the memorial mass for our recently
deceased classmate, S. Therese
Higgins. My husband, Albert, and I
have been fortunate to spend Aug.
and Sept. at our daughter’s Cape
home, which has given me a chance
to spend time with many of our Capebased
classmates. During our stay,
Elaine Richardson ’76 hosted a luncheon
for Dorothy Mahoney McKenna,
Peg Donovan, Rita Dailey Fahey, and
me. It was a chance to catch up and
share some news. Rita was passing
through mid-Cape after a vacation
with her husband, Frank, in Wellfleet,
where her daughter Michelle’s family
was summering. Dot, as always, was
full of news. She has enjoyed visits
by her children and grandchildren
all summer long, and she reports
that she’s back to full speed after a
few readjustments to her replaced
hip. I had occasion to welcome Peg
Donovan into the “so you broke your
hip club” earlier this summer (I’ve
broken both over the years!). She and
I have shared a few “physical therapy
sessions” in her pool. Peg’s partial hip
replacement has not slowed her a bit,
and during our lunch she told us of
her many travels this year, including
the annual winter escape to St.
Maarten and Aruba. Also in August,
I had the pleasure of attending mass
one Sunday morning at the home of
Marie Dillon Doran ’40. At the gathering
in celebration of the feast of the
Assumption alongside the sparkling
waters of Lewis Bay were Marie’s
daughter, Cathy Doran ’74, my
daughter Elaine, and Doris Tassinari,
the sister of our classmate Eleanor
Reagan Curran. Marie’s grandchildren,
Katy and Dan Doran, and my
grandson, Connor Patrick Richardson,
participated as lectors and servers
in the mass. Please drop me a
line about your recent or upcoming
adventures so that we can add your
news to the next alumnae magazine.
And of course I hope we will have the
chance to convene in November when
the Regis community honors those
friends and classmates who have been
called home to the Lord during the
annual Mass of Remembrance. In the
meantime, stay happy and
healthy and stay in touch!
¶ Present at the lovely
Alumni Luncheon at Regis
in May were several of
our classmates, including
Marion Blue Brennan,
Barbara Sullivan, Jane
McGrath, Marie Fisher Lee, Ann O’Hare
Smith and S. Regina Harrington, CSJ.
Recently, Barbara enjoyed a cruise
down the Atlantic coastline, and
Marie Fisher Lee had a wonderful
family reunion. She brought great
pictures with her to the luncheon to
share with her classmates. Nancie
Turner Donelan, having just celebrated
the birth of her second grandchild,
has begun to think that Heloise needs
help. She wanted to share her latest
hint for cleaning a dirty microwave
oven. Set the microwave to 2 minutes
and nuke 1 cup of water and 2 or 3
tablespoons of lime juice. Let stand
until cool. Wipe with paper towel.
Voila, spotless microwave. Use rest of
lime to flavor a summer beverage of
your own choosing (that’s my hint).
Marion Mulrennan Graham reports
that her family traveled en masse to
County Mayo for the wedding of son
Patrick and his beautiful Irish lass.
Rumor has it that it was the best
wedding ever on either side of the
Atlantic. The Mulrennan family also
has its roots in that same country.
Our roving reporter met with Mary
Jane Crowley Murray for brunch at the
All Day Breakfast Restaurant, near
Goose Rocks Beach. Her family felt
she needed a break after a difficult
year and made all the arrangements
to allow her to have three days of visiting
in the vacation spot of her youth.
She was able to meet with a number
of old friends. What a thoughtful
family, and what a perfect gift. We
received notice recently that our
classmates, Mary Lou Queenan Borges
and Mary Alice Scanlan Connelly, had
passed away. May God grant them
great joy and peace. We extend our
deepest sympathy to their families
and friends. Since news is sparse for
this issue, despite the good work done
by our constantly roving reporter,
I thought I would reminisce with
some thoughts from a talk I gave at
our 25th Reunion, June 1973, titled
“I Remember Regis.” ¶ Twenty-five
years ago, the world was young, and
so were we. We were, despite a World
War, or perhaps because of it, a docile
generation, steeped in innocence and
naïveté. We had at Regis, this class of
class notes
I had the occasion to
welcome Peg Donovan ’47
to the “so you broke
your hip club”
earlier this summer.
