REGIS TODAY
taking part in the “Derby Pool” were
Judy, Peggy Harney Morrissey, Marie
Cronin, Maureen O’Connell Palmer,
Anne LaFay Flamand, Trisha O’Hearn
Hilsinger, Janice Canniff Monteith, and
Liz Russell Bilafer. The big winner
this year was Trisha. A trip to the
Herring Run in Brewster, MA, was
disappointing. We thought we were in
time but unfortunately missed it by a
week. We did see one lonely straggler.
¶ Ann Tiernan, who wrote us from her
new home in the Smoky Mountain
area of NC, has had some recent
sadness. Our sympathy to Ann on the
loss of her 2 sisters and her partner.
Ann recently had a hip replacement
but manages to keep herself quite
active—camping in the Southwest
and taking courses at UNCA. She
also sends a message: “Aging is a
delightful opportunity to expand—in
so many ways.” ¶ Congratulations
to Maureen Palmer on the birth of
her new grandson. Welcome, Jack
Palmer! ¶ The monthly luncheons
have been well attended: Venezia in
Dorchester, MA, Tom Shea’s in Essex,
MA, Beacon Grill in Woburn, MA,
and of course the delightful June
lunch at Mary Jane England’s home on
Green Pond in Falmouth, MA. ¶ The
Annual Cape Cod Luncheon was held
this year at the Coonamessett Inn in
Falmouth, MA. As always, our class
was well represented with 2 tables
of ’59ers: Brenda Meade Doherty,
Fran Kopka Parsons, Edna Soraghan
English, Carol Donovan, Margaret
O’Connell, Sherry Furlott Blanchard,
Kay O’Connor Johnson, Barbara O’Neil
Natale, Marilyn Lombardi Nicholas,
Joanne Myers, Mary Jane England,
Maureen O’Connell Palmer, Janice
Canniff Monteith and Jane Darney
Beauchemin. ¶ Jane Beauchemin, who
was coming along so well after many
months in and out of the hospital,
fell at her home just a week after
the Cape Luncheon. She broke her
hip and was back in the hospital
and rehab again. ¶ A couple of book
suggestions from Liz and Maureen:
Sarah’s Key, by Tatiana deRosnay,
and The Forgotten Garden, by Kate
Morton. ¶ Regis celebrated St.
Patrick’s Day in fine style and the
Class of 1959 made a great presence.
Have you ever been to the St.
Patrick’s Day Parade in Naples, FL?
Forty thousand joyous folks lined the
street to cheer us on. One man even
hollered out, “I think I dated all of
you!” Perhaps he did. Some ’59ers
walked the route, and others rode the
Regis Trolley. The night before the
parade Jeannette Duffy Hartigan and
her husband, Dick, graciously hosted
a cocktail party for the ’59ers at their
beautiful penthouse overlooking the
Gulf of Mexico. On Sunday Regis held
a luncheon at the Club Pelican Bay.
What a fabulous weekend! Enjoying
the festivities during the
weekend were Barbara O’Neil
Natale, Liz Russell Bilafer,
Carol Donovan, Audrey Bowen
Criado, Marilyn Lombardi
Nicholas, Margie Finn Morich,
Rita Noonan Griffin, Maureen
O’Connell Palmer, Frannie
Kopka Parsons, Brenda Meade
Doherty, Janice Canniff ¶
Monteith, Jeannette Duffy
Hartigan, and Mary Jane
England. Margaret Sullivan
Schlueter, who has a home on
Marco Island, attended the
luncheon on Sunday. Everyone
is looking forward to the next
parade in Naples. The parade is
March 12, 2011, so get on your
walking shoes and come down
and join the fun. ¶ Our next
report will not be coming to you until
after the holidays, so we wish one and
all a very happy Thanksgiving and a
joyous Christmas. Send us a note during
the holidays—we need some news!
about THE Reunion: A MARVELOUS
TIME. Altogether there were about
74 attendees from our class during
the various activities. Now we are
all members of the GOLDEN TOWER
SOCIETY and are eligible for the
Golden Tower Luncheons along with
all the other 50-plus-year graduates.
¶ New class representatives for the
next 5 years are Catherine (Kay) Keane
Memory, President; Ann Hynes, Class
Fund Agent; me, Class Reporter;
Geraldine Pucci Hayes, West Coast
Liaison. Since we have many class
members in FL and the Southeast,
perhaps we can have a liaison from
there. Email me if you are interested!
The objective is to stay in touch,
perhaps have some get-togethers, and
continue the communications and
bonding that began in college days
and is renewed at Reunion and other
gatherings. ¶ What do we remember
from Reunion? The weekend
began with a most moving Liturgy
when a rose was placed on the
altar in memory of the 27 deceased
members of our class. The music of
the Alumnae Chorus was wonderful,
and how inspiring to have our
classmates Anne McIsaac Sullivan and
Clare Mullahy Mungovan as chorus
members, along with Ann’s daughter,
Eileen Sullivan ’85. ¶ Our condolences
go to Louise McMurray Wishneski,
whose husband, Larry, died on Apr.
7 after a 7-year illness. Kay Memory
remembered Nancy Sheehan when she
invited some of the Psych Ed majors
to prep for the Boston Teachers Exam
at her home in West Roxbury, MA.
A Reminder
Class Notes for the Spring 2011 issue are
due January 12, 2011; each class limited to
1,000 words.
You are invited to submit articles and news that
are of interest to your classmates. If you know of
any alum who would make an interesting profile
subject, please let us know that, too. News
may be submitted to your class reporter or to
the Office of Alumni Relations, Regis College,
235 Wellesley St., Weston, MA 02493 or email:
alumni@regiscollege.edu. Notes received after
January 12, 2011 will run in a later issue.
“We practiced with the tests given in
previous years, and all of us passed!”
Our thoughts and prayers are with
Nancy now as she faces serious and
very unexpected medical issues. Her
help and enthusiasm during the planning
sessions of our class Reunion
committee was much appreciated.
¶ Joyce Kennerly Bohan found that
part of the fun was discovering that
classmates were the “same people
with the same pleasant personalities
that I remember from 50 years ago.”
“It was very easy to slip right back
in sync,” she said. ¶ “It seemed to me
that although the Regis we knew has
changed, it still remains a part of us
all in so many ways.” Anne McIsaac
Sullivan reported, “My favorite time
was Friday night when everyone
just relaxed. What was more amazing
was to see classmates that we
hadn’t seen or spoken to in 50 years
and to catch up with their lives.” Kay
Memory noted, “The stories about
‘the way we were’ were so interesting!
Having to wear a trench coat
over our gym suits when going to the
playing fields, the black lace mantillas
required for chapel, dressing for
dinner in the dining room, rushing
back from a night out by 10 p.m. so
as to not receive a demerit, etc.” ¶
Maria Migliorini Bonaventura has now
retired from a rewarding career as a
professor at Suffolk University. Carole
Riordan Ressler, who worked for a
while at Regis, is now an attorney.
Marcelle Lamoureux Connare looked
the same as she did in her Regis days.
She still lives in NH and proudly
introduced her husband, to whom she
was recently married. ¶ Eileen Smith
Dragula made the long trip from CA,
where she and her Marine husband
settled to raise their family. Gerri
Pucci Hayes also came from CA,
where she lives an active life of with
much singing and concert going. ¶
One item of great joy was the smiling
expression from Mary Jane Doherty
Curran as she announced quietly that
