- CODE OF THE COUNTYAPPENDIX B - SUBDIVISION ORDINANCEARTICLE 6 - STREET AND SIDEWALKSDIVISION 3 MINIMUM STREET IMPROVEMENTS6.14Service drives.Whenever a proposed subdivision contains or is adjacent to a limited access highway orexpressway, provision shall be made for a service drive or marginal street approximately parallel to suchright-of-way at a distance suitable for an appropriate use of the land between such highway and theproposed subdivision. Such distance shall be determined with due consideration of the minimum distancerequired for ingress and egress to the main thoroughfare. The right-of-way of any major highway or streetprojected across any railroad, limited access highway, or expressway shall be of adequate width toprovide for the cuts or fills required for any future separation of grades.6.15Drainage easements.1. Where existing topography or other conditions make it impractical for the inclusion of drainagefacilities within road rights-of-way, perpetual, unobstructed easements, at least twenty (20) feet inwidth, for drainage facilities shall be provided across property outside the road right-of-way limits.Easements shall be indicated on the plat. Drainage easements shall extend from the road to anatural watercourse or to other drainage facilities.2. When a proposed drainage system will carry water across private land outside the subdivision,appropriate drainage rights must be secured and indicated on the plat.DIVISION 3MINIMUM STREET IMPROVEMENTS6.16 Generally.6.17 Street names.6.18 Street name signs.6.19 Street lights.Sec. 6.20 Reserve strips.6.21 Street extension notification signs. (reserved)6.16Generally.The minimum design, construction, and material standards for all public street improvements for<strong>Bedford</strong> <strong>County</strong> shall be prescribed by the requirements of the <strong>Virginia</strong> Department of Transportationunless otherwise specified by this ordinance.6.17Street names.Proposed streets which are obviously in alignment with other already existing and named streetsshall bear the names of the existing street. In no case shall the name of proposed streets duplicate orclosely approximate existing street names in the county, nor shall they duplicate street names of adjoiningjurisdictions if such name should conflict with the delivery services of the United States Postal Service inthat location. The use of any suffix, such as street, avenue, boulevard, drive, way, place, lane, or court, to<strong>Bedford</strong> <strong>County</strong>, <strong>Virginia</strong>, Code of <strong>Ordinance</strong>s Page 33
