BASE STRENGTH
Ionce received a lesson in power and strength that lasted less than 15 seconds and provided
me mental fuel that has burned for twenty years. In the mid-1980’s I was at a
powerlift competition coaching a friend. Coaching another lifter was George Hechter, the
number one ranked heavyweight lifter in the world at the time. He was a smart, sharp guy
and a protégé of iron icon Bill Starr.
The mythical George Hechter in a rare photo: George totaled 2400 and took second
at the IPF World Championships in the 80’s. He squatted 975, benched 600 and deadlifted
830 weighing 360 pounds. He was 5’10”. He reduced down to 239 pounds (pictured) and
squatted 880, bench pressed 550 and deadlifted 840. Plus he looked absolutely incredible. I
handled him at this APF meet where he got in trouble on the squat and took second place
to Willie ‘The Hammer’ Bell.
