G UIDELINES FOR M ALARIA P REVENTION IN<br />

T RAVELLERS FROM THE U NITED K INGDOM<br />

These practical guidel<strong>in</strong>es <strong>from</strong> <strong>the</strong> Health Protection Agency Advisory<br />

Committee on Malaria Prevention <strong>for</strong> UK Travellers update and comb<strong>in</strong>e <strong>the</strong><br />

“<strong>Guidel<strong>in</strong>es</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>malaria</strong> <strong>prevention</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>travellers</strong> <strong>from</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>United</strong> K<strong>in</strong>gdom <strong>for</strong><br />

2003” and “Malaria prophylaxis <strong>for</strong> long-term <strong>travellers</strong>” <strong>in</strong> a new <strong>for</strong>mat.<br />

The guidel<strong>in</strong>es are <strong>for</strong> use by healthcare workers who advise <strong>travellers</strong> but may<br />

also be of use to prospective <strong>travellers</strong> who wish to read about <strong>the</strong> options<br />

<strong>the</strong>mselves.<br />

The ACMP prophylaxis guidel<strong>in</strong>es are <strong>in</strong>tended <strong>for</strong> UK-based visitors to <strong>malaria</strong><br />

endemic areas and may not be appropriate <strong>for</strong> use by those resid<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong><br />

endemic areas.<br />

Whilst <strong>the</strong>se guidel<strong>in</strong>es deal with <strong>malaria</strong>, <strong>malaria</strong> <strong>prevention</strong> is only one aspect<br />

of pre-travel advice. An overall risk assessment-based package of travel health<br />

advice should be provided.<br />

These guidel<strong>in</strong>es are also available on <strong>the</strong> Health Protection Agency website<br />

www.hpa.org.uk <strong>in</strong> topics A-Z under <strong>malaria</strong>. This site should be checked<br />

regularly <strong>for</strong> subsequent updates.<br />
