G UIDELINES FOR M ALARIA P REVENTION IN<br />

T RAVELLERS FROM THE U NITED K INGDOM<br />

Foreword<br />

Each year between 1500 and 2000 people are diagnosed with <strong>malaria</strong> on <strong>the</strong>ir return<br />

to <strong>the</strong> UK. Anyone visit<strong>in</strong>g a malarious area can become <strong>in</strong>fected no matter what age<br />

or sex or ethnic background. Malaria can kill very quickly if not diagnosed <strong>in</strong> time.<br />

In 2005 <strong>the</strong>re were 11 deaths <strong>from</strong> <strong>malaria</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> UK.<br />

However <strong>the</strong>se deaths and illness are avoidable. We know that most people requir<strong>in</strong>g<br />

medical attention <strong>for</strong> <strong>malaria</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> UK have not taken <strong>the</strong> correct precautions needed<br />

<strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir visit. The Health Protection Agency is committed to ensur<strong>in</strong>g a cont<strong>in</strong>u<strong>in</strong>g<br />

reduction <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> risk of <strong>malaria</strong> to UK <strong>travellers</strong> by rais<strong>in</strong>g awareness of <strong>malaria</strong> be<strong>for</strong>e<br />

people travel and help<strong>in</strong>g to guide healthcare professionals <strong>in</strong> giv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> best advice<br />

available.<br />

These guidel<strong>in</strong>es <strong>from</strong> <strong>the</strong> Agency’s Advisory Committee on Malaria Prevention <strong>in</strong> UK<br />

<strong>travellers</strong> update <strong>the</strong> 2003 advice. Both <strong>the</strong> web and book <strong>for</strong>mat have been designed<br />

with <strong>the</strong> busy health care advisor <strong>in</strong> m<strong>in</strong>d so that <strong>the</strong>y are easy to use and give clear<br />

simple guidance.<br />

The general public may also f<strong>in</strong>d <strong>the</strong>m useful to read be<strong>for</strong>e <strong>the</strong>y visit <strong>the</strong>ir GP’s surgery<br />

or a travel cl<strong>in</strong>ic <strong>for</strong> specific advice tailored to <strong>the</strong>ir needs; whe<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong>y are tak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

children to visit family <strong>in</strong> Africa or India <strong>for</strong> a month, backpack<strong>in</strong>g <strong>for</strong> 6 months round<br />

South America, tak<strong>in</strong>g a <strong>for</strong>tnight’s package holiday to Africa or work<strong>in</strong>g <strong>for</strong> a week <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Middle East.<br />
