Contra<strong>in</strong>dications<br />

Pregnancy: The BNF states “Manufacturer<br />

advises avoid unless essential.” ACMP<br />

advises aga<strong>in</strong>st <strong>the</strong> use of<br />

atovaquone/proguanil <strong>for</strong> anti<strong>malaria</strong>l<br />

chemoprophylaxis <strong>in</strong> pregnancy.<br />

Inadvertent conception when us<strong>in</strong>g<br />

atovaquone/proguanil is not an<br />

<strong>in</strong>dication to consider term<strong>in</strong>ation of <strong>the</strong><br />

pregnancy, as no evidence of harm has<br />

emerged <strong>in</strong> data so far available.<br />

Atovaquone/proguanil should generally<br />

be avoided <strong>in</strong> breast feed<strong>in</strong>g, but ACMP<br />

advises that atovaquone/proguanil can<br />

be used when breast-feed<strong>in</strong>g if <strong>the</strong>re is<br />

no suitable alternative anti<strong>malaria</strong>l.<br />

Methods of adm<strong>in</strong>istration<br />

Tablets conta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g proguanil 100 mg and<br />

atovaquone 250 mg. Paediatric tablets<br />

conta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g proguanil 25 mg and<br />

atovaquone 62.5 mg. Adult dose one<br />

tablet daily start<strong>in</strong>g 1 to 2 days be<strong>for</strong>e<br />

enter<strong>in</strong>g a <strong>malaria</strong> endemic area,<br />

cont<strong>in</strong>u<strong>in</strong>g throughout <strong>the</strong> time <strong>the</strong>re<br />

and <strong>for</strong> 1 week after leav<strong>in</strong>g. Paediatric<br />

dosage given <strong>in</strong> table 6.<br />
