Interview with the
Austrian Consul for Trade,
Michael Berger
L’Austria è uno Stato con alta densità
di forestazione, in cui la “cultura
del legno” è una tradizione molto
sentita e sviluppata nelle sue varie
applicazioni e, soprattutto, nelle
costruzioni residenziali. Grazie alla
grande disponibilità di legno,
l’Austria vanta una quota export
molto alta, sostenuta dalla Camera
Economica Federale Austriaca.
Per avere maggiori dati e conoscere
l’attuale situazione, abbiamo incontrato
il Console Commerciale Austriaco
in Italia, nel suo ufficio di Milano.
Al Dott. Michael Berger abbiamo
chiesto di fornirci un aggiornamento
sulla presenza dei prodotti Austriaci
in Italia. “La situazione – ha risposto il Dott. Berger – è
abbastanza favorevole: negli ultimi anni la Camera
Economica Federale, a cui sono iscritti 450.000 membri su
una popolazione di 8 milioni, può contare su 43.000 esportatori
abituali che fatturano 110 miliardi di euro ed una
quota export del 60%. La disoccupazione è molto bassa,
con una percentuale inferiore al 5% e, poiché il nostro partner
principale è la Germania, quando questo paese è in
espansione, anche noi godiamo di un momento favorevole.
In Austria abbiamo 1.400 segherie, industrie di pannelli e
aziende produttrici di travi lamellari per l’edilizia che, tutti
insieme, danno lavoro a 30.000 addetti ed in tutto il ciclo
della lavorazione del legno, vengono prodotti circa 18 milioni
di m3 di legname e manufatti. Da qualche anno la
Camera Economica Federale Austriaca ha intrapreso iniziative
con lo scopo di sviluppare l’export anche con altri Stati
ed oggi l’Italia è il nostro secondo partner commerciale con
un quota export totale del 9%. Quest’anno abbiamo avuto
un incremento del fatturato del 20% nei primi 5 mesi.
La maggior parte dei nostri scambi è con l’Italia del nord,
solo il 10% con il centro e sud Italia, per questo abbiamo
cominciato a proporre delle manifestazioni con le Camere di
Commercio delle città più importanti del Sud d’Italia, organizzando
incontri con gli operatori di Roma, Palermo e
Napoli. In futuro è in programma un incontro anche a Bari .
Il volume d’affari nei settore legno, delle esportazioni Austriache
verso l’Italia è di oltre 1 miliardo di euro e, naturalmente, il
legno, i mobili ed i manufatti in legno, sono al primo posto.

To find out more and to have a picture
of the current situation, we
spoke to the Austrian Consul for
Trade in his Milan office.
We asked Dr. Michael Berger for an
update on the presence of Austrian
products in Italy. “The situation – Dr. Berger told us – is fairly
positive: in recent years, the Federal Chamber of
Commerce, with 450,000 members out of a population of 8
million, has been able to count on 43,000 regular exporters,
with a turnover of € 110 billion and an export share of 60%.
Unemployment is very low, less than 5%, and since our
main partner is Germany, a positive situation there has positive
knock-on effects for us too.
In Austria we have 1,400 sawmills, companies that produce
panels and firms that make laminated beams for the construction
industry. Altogether, these businesses employ
30,000 people, and the entire wood processing cycle produces
around 18 million m3 of wood and wood products.
For a few years now, the Austrian Federal Chamber of
Commerce has been working on projects aimed at developing
exports towards other countries, and Italy is currently
our second most important trading partner, with a total
export share of 9%. This year we have registered a 20% rise
in turnover in the first five months.
Most of our trade is carried out with northern Italy, with the
centre and south accounting for just 10%.
This is why we have started contacting the Chambers of
Commerce in the most important cities in the south of Italy,
to organise encounters with operators in Rome, Palermo
and Naples. Also in the pipeline is a meeting in Bari.
The turnover of Austrian exports in the wood sector to Italy
stands at over € 1 billion, with wood, furniture and wooden
objects naturally heading the list.
