News from the International Office
During fall 2008 a total of 51 HHL students
have spent a term abroad at one of HHL’s
partner universities (Asia 11, Australia and
New Zealand 3, Europe 18, North America 7,
Latin America 12). At the same time, HHL
welcomed 39 exchange students from all
over the world (Asia 15, Europe 16, North
America 2, and Latin America 6). In addition,
HHL’s part-time MBA students spent a week
in Shanghai, with outstanding support from
HHL’s partner Tongji University (see p. 36).
A study period abroad is extremely important
for HHL students. It provides valuable
insights into foreign cultures. Incoming exchange
students help to internationalize
HHL’s regu-lar programs. HHL makes every
effort to guarantee these places at foreign

It has been a valuable experience to come
to HHL as exchange students and take
part in interesting courses, be taught by
first-class professors and meet wonderful
fellow students who will remain in our memories
for a long time.
We were so fortunate to study in a very
international atmosphere and get to know
partner universities and to attract excellent
exchange students. This involves monitoring
exchange flows and securing equal conditions
in student information. During 2008 HHL
negotiated new agreements with the following
universities: IEDC Bled (Slovakia), ALBA
(Greece), U Louisville (USA), Zagreb School
of Economics (Kroatia), Audencia Nantes
(France), ISM Vilnius (Lithuania), Victoria U
Wellington (New Zealand), Drexel U (USA).
Intensive communication is necessary to
ensure an ongoing flow of information. HHL
visited some of its partner universities and
had the chance to welcome some of its partners
in 2008, but most of the meetings took
place at international conferences. For this
reason HHL’s Director of International Relati-
students from Germany, China, Japan,
Sweden, and many other countries. It is
also great to see how the professors interacted
in an international way and to experience
their excellent teaching style.
Leipzig is a beautiful city with many opportunities
in terms both of cultural life and
other activities. It represents the typical
Eastern side of Germany, which we were
delighted to get to know. We met friendly
locals who were always willing to assist us.

NAFSA meeting in Washington, the EAIE
meeting in Antwerp, the qs-Conference in
Seoul, just to mention a few at university level.
The following annual conferences were also
relevant for HHL’s International Department
in 2008 as opportunities to network with international
colleagues: AACSB in Honolulu/
USA, CLADEA in Puebla/Mexico (Latin America),
CEEMAN in Tirana/Albania (Central
and Eastern Europe), efmd in Oslo/Norway
(Europe), and in addition the International
Dean’s Confer-ence in Shanghai/China and
the Global Conference of AACSB and efmd
in Barcelona/Spain.

The surroundings of Leipzig are also really
worth seeing with beautiful lakes and forests.
All in all, we certainly recommend
Leipzig as a city to visit and HHL as a
school to study at. And, of course, we
would like to see students from HHL come
to Iceland for an exchange visit. A warm
Icelandic welcome awaits!
