Happy hunting, or 20 minutes in the life of a librarian

Yes! Finally! I’ve got you! Am I sorry for you?
No, I am not. Mr. Student – one of dozens of
inquirers at HHL – really needed you. I had to
hunt you down! I am an HHL Librarian – so,
who am I actually chasing? Let’s call him Arthur
– Arthur Article – a single piece from the tangled
world of scientific publications.
Mr. Student had given me an advance notice of
Arthur Article from somebody’s publications
list. “Forthcoming” it said, naming the title of the

and there seems to run in his family, who is, by
the way, not unfamiliar to me: A few weeks ago
I searched for one of his ancestors, Annie Article
from the seventies. I found her in a publisher’s
archive with free access generously funded by
the German national government. With Arthur’s
expected date of publication being 2008, I
knew that it would be useless to search for him
in open space. Printed Articles of the younger
generation rarely present themselves freely to
the public. Sometimes you find a relatively new
Article in a free online issue. Save it – next time
you access the page you may be forced to pay
per view. Sometimes one happens to find a
kind of pre-print Article on the web. But would
you prefer a half-baked roll to a tasty bakery
product?
Let’s check HHL’s resources: I type the name of
the sought-after journal into the new A-Z metasearch
tool on the homepage of HHL’s Library:
“Journal of Innovation Management” – no result.
Hmm, is there such a journal at all? I ask
the Journals Database (last quick link on the
Library’s homepage) – again no result. Maybe,

“Journal of Innovation in Man-
agement”? No hits. Let’s restrict the title
search to just the three words Journal, Innovation,
Management – voilà, the “International
Journal of Innovation Management” is the
closest match out of the 16 titles listed. Back
to the A-Z metasearch, typing “International
Journal of Innovation Management”. The different
access options shown tell me that the
journal is not available at HHL and that we do
not have access to the 2008 issues via the
Ebsco database because of a 12-month embargo
on the digital fulltexts. So Arthur Article
seems to be the perfect candidate for a distance
loan order. But was it published in
2008 at all? In which issue? Under which title?
The hunt has just begun... .

open for all students and staff at HHL.
