On August 25, 2008, as part of the Production
Management course at the Heinz
Nixdorf Chair of IT-based Logistics, HHL’s
MBA students had the opportunity to learn
more about the challenges facing today’s
prosperous and competitive logistics service
providers. Alexander Kutscher from
Infraserv Logistics Leipzig GmbH, a sub-
sidiary of the highly successful Frankfurt-

Management – students had the opportunity
to gain interesting insights into the
motivation, requirements, processes and ex-
based Infraserv Logistics GmbH, and his
colleague Jürgen Ortlepp gave an impressive
presentation on the range and scale of
the challenges involved in identifying and
complying with quality criteria along the
value creation chain.
Kutscher and Ortlepp began by introducing
the concept of the “House of Quality” as
perience of setting up DHL Hub Leipzig
GmbH. It was therefore a great pleasure for
the organizers at HHL to welcome Michael
Reinboth, CEO of DHL Hub Leipzig GmbH,
as a guest speaker on September 18, 2008.
During his presentation, Mr. Reinboth
described in detail the process
of setting up DHL in the
Leipzig/Halle region, from the
very beginning in 2005 to the
commencement of full operations
in 2008. He pointed out that less
than three years elapsed between
planning and realization, a phenomenal
achievement for everybody
involved in the gigantic
project. As Mr. Reinboth was on
board right from the start, he was
able to illustrate very vividly the
special challenges facing the
HHL NEWS – WINTER 2008/2009
one basic element in “Quality Function
Deployment (QFD)”, a well-known quality
management technique. They then started
to construct a “House of Quality” with the
students, taking into account customer requirements
that had been identified.
The event was rounded off with a workshop
in which the students were faced as
design engineers with the challenge of developing
a seat for a luxury car fulfilling all
customer requirements.
Following the lecture and workshop, the
speakers were available to answer the numerous
questions the students had. The
guest lecture by Infraserv Logistics Leipzig
GmbH underlined once again the highly
practical orientation of education at HHL.
Further presentations by practitioners will
follow in the near future in the framework of
the Production Management course.

DHL Hub Leipzig GmbH and him personally
as the project leader. He also pointed out
the opportunities opened up for the region
by this investment – the creation of more
than 2000 new jobs is just one impressive
example – and looked at the future of DHL
in the region.
After his presentation, Mr. Reinboth was happy
to talk with the students and answer their
questions. The tour of the hub on September
22, which he personally guided, capped off
the class, and brought home the magnitude
of the project team’s achievement.
The cooperation between DHL and HHL will
be of great interest in the future for both the
Heinz Nixdorf Chair of IT-based Logistics and
CITLOG, connecting theory with practical experience.
