Wernigerode, November 25, 2008 IHK Chair of Applied Economic Theory Saxon biotechnology under the (economic) microscope The Center for Healthcare Management (CHM) at the IHK Chair of Applied Economic Theory was asked by the Saxon State Ministry of Science and the Fine Arts (SMWK) to evaluate the development of biotechnology in Saxony from an economic point of view. Characteristics of biotechnology In a first phase, the characteristics and challenges of the biotech market were highlighted: high R & D expenditures, long and risky research periods of up to 14 years and problems with the financing of start-ups as well as other factors influenced growth in the biotech industry. Nevertheless, to date this industry is comprised of many small companies with diverse activities regarding research and development. Biotech location Saxony In a second phase (scheduled to last until June 2009), the biotech landscape in Saxony will be examined based on the findings from International meetings and conferences Professor Dr. Hans Wiesmeth was invited to give a keynote lecture on “The Private Finance Initiative: Investment Opportunities in Waste Management” at the 2nd International Conference on Accounting and Finance in Thessaloniki, Greece, August 28-30, 2008. He was also invited to present the same paper at the EU-Asia Solid Waste Management Conference in Ipoh, Malaysia, October 28-30. October 12-27, Professor Wiesmeth participated in the final meeting of the Asia Link Pro- ject “INVENT – Integrated Waste Management Modules for Different Courses of Graduate Studies”. HHL is represented by the IHK Chair of Applied Economic Theory in this project which spans six countries. Professor Wiesmeth gave presentations on the topic of “Integrated Waste Management” in workshops and training courses in Phnom Penh (Cambodia), Can Tho (Vietnam), Vientiane (Laos) and Bangkok (Thailand). Indeed, the local development in Saxony will be investigated in a national context. The analysis will focus on patents, on third-party funding and venture capital, and on strategic alliances of companies and research institutions worldwide.The study will provide some insight into the special characteristics of a potential new growth area. Dennis Häckl being accompanied by increasing amounts of waste, while environmental awareness has not yet developed. “Integrated Waste Management” integrates waste and what could be done with it into the economic allocation problems; practical implementations are based on the three Rs: reduce, reuse, and recycle. Integrated waste management is a growth area, with a turnover of 120 billion EUR in the European Union last year. In 2008, venture capitalists in the US are expected to invest more than 1 billion dollars in innovative recycling projects.
Research Center for Healthcare Management prepares eHealth project for European Union HHL’s Center for Healthcare Management (CHM) conducted a scientific study on telemedical care of pacemaker patients. The project, which included an analysis of 98 studies throughout Europe and a benefit assessment, was designed to assist in making fundamental decisions regarding the further application of telemedical procedures. The study was commissioned by Eucomed, an association of more than 60 leading medical technology manufacturers in Europe including Johnson & Johnson, 3M, Biotronik and Medtronic. The results will be made available to the European Commission which is about to launch a communication campaign for telemedicine. Enormous benefits for patients “Most health insurers and hospitals have recognized that remote patient monitoring technology, if applied correctly, offers enormous benefits for the patient and is very economical. Our research project looked at the European dimension of this issue for the first time and provides scientific evidence of the benefit,” explains Dr. Christian Elsner, Director of CHM. The researchers also assessed regulatory frameworks and found that most European countries face very similar problems: “Reimbursement is insufficiently regulated, which means that the use of telemedicine de facto generates a loss for physicians although the technology as such can very well cut costs for all parties involved and improve the quality of care,” says Dennis Häckl, co-author of the study. Attractive market CHM, known for its expertise in eHealth and reimbursement issues, was also asked to estimate the size of the telecardiology market for investors. According to the research work done, the market for telecardiology alone promises revenues totaling 400 million EUR annually. Next steps An action plan is being developed which will facilitate implementation of structured reimbursement and which will recommend regulatory measures. CHM is cooperating with several partners on the design and implementation of such a new reimbursement system. A pilot project is scheduled to be presented in early 2009. Dow Chair of Sustainability and Global Ethics New staff Hans-Christian Erdmann (K21) joined the Dow Research Professorship for Sustainability and Global Ethics as a Research Associate in August 2008. He graduated from HHL with a Diploma in Business Administration, majoring in Finance and Entrepreneurship. Before joining HHL’s Diploma program, he worked as a consultant for the Public Diplomacy Division at the NATO headquarters in Brussels. During his studies, he gained work experience in the German media industry and in various companies.
