Model Covenant for Arriving Pastor<br />

(This covenant is an optional model, which an arriving pastoral leader might choose to make with the<br />
congregation and predecessor pastoral leader.)<br />
As Christians we are all baptized into the priesthood of Christ to offer ourselves to the Lord of the Church in<br />
thanksgiving for what he has done and continues to do for us. It is my/our privilege to recognize and support<br />
the mission and ministry of ____________________ (congregation) at ____________________ (place) as<br />
pastor.<br />
I, Pastor _______________________ (name), in prayerful conversation with the Congregation Council,<br />
discussed the intent of the Healthy Transition documents of the Northwest Synod of Wisconsin, and enter<br />
into the following covenant:<br />
I promise:<br />
1. to pray for my predecessor in their ministry for the sake of the mission of the church; and<br />
2. to speak to the good and positive word about my predecessor(s) and the relationship(s) they had with<br />
the congregation, but not to yield my pastoral role, and<br />
3. if my predecessor chooses to live in this community, to treat them as a valued pastoral colleague,<br />
neighbor, and/or member of this parish; and further<br />
4. to ______________________________________________________________<br />
It is understood that this covenant does not affect or require termination of friendships my predecessor and<br />
his/her family may have with individuals in this congregation.<br />
