O ne of th e req uirement s of a good net co nt ro l st at io n is t he abil i ty to keep track of all the sta tions t hat have checked in and to know where they are located and if they have any traffic. I used to use quite a bit of paper to do th is, and my penma n ship d uring busy sessions w as m ore of a hindrance th an an aid in operati ng. Since t he TRS-80 Level II ha s s uc h good st ri ng handling ability, I decided it wa s t ime to do aw ay w it h all my chicken scratc hing. " Net Control" ha s bee n used at my sta tio n for about a yea r now, and it sure m akes for a m uc h smoother o pe ra t io n. Normally, in net o pe rat ions , t he net co nt ro l oper ato r as ks for peo ple to cheek in with him by giving t heir ca llsigns. After he has gat hered a cert ain number of chec k-ins, he goes back and systemat ica lly "runs" 'each statio n through t he net. Basically, what the program does is ask for a list of new ch eck -ins. When net control asks for check-ins, t here usually is m ass co n fusio n and not a ll of t he ca llsigns are intelligible. It is up to the cont rol station to get eno ugh of each call to separat e t hem one from anothe r. So, fo r the program , it is necessary only th at a portion of each call is entered. (It is desirab le to have the comp let e callsign go in, but it is not necessa ry.) W h en ev e r y o ne h a s checked in, or when the servi ce co nt ro l sta t ion determine s th at he 's had enough, he halts any further entries. The prog ram 's list is halted by typing the lett er Lo n th e line after the last callsign. This tell s the com puter t o st art doing its th ing.
