Several operators at Australia's
Will is Isla nd continued active,
signing VK9 ZG on 20
meters only . They will continue
through 1980, after which the
island's weather station will be
automate d and te chnicians
from Australia will seldom be
needed. That will increase WIllis's
rarity dramati cally. a SL to
San Hutson K5YY operated
from ZK2 Niue, A35 Tonga, and
KS6 Ameri can Samoa during July;
it was his eighth expediti on
since 1969. Concentratin g on
160, 80, 40, and 10 meters, San
made nearly 12,000 cont acts
from the three spots, about onethird
of them on CWo His only
complaints were the consta nt
requests for a SL information
and for times when he might be
found on certain bands. As thi s
inform ation was publis hed in
the various OX bulletins, San
needlessly had to spend time
an swering question s. Oth erwise,
all went well and the demand
for several countries, especially
on the low bands, was
reduced. a SL to San Hut son
Dick Granth am VE1AI put
Canada's Sable Island on the air
for about 48 hours the last weekend
of Ju ne; a longer sta y was
precluded by the auth orities.
Abo ut 1300 co ntact s were
made, including a fairly high percentage
of Europeans and Japanese.
Conditions for working
Canadian and U.S. DXers were
not so hot on the hig her bands.
Sable Island, by the way, is si x
square miles, has six perman ent
inhabita nts operating a weather
station, and is a difficult landing
by boat.
Erik Sjolund SM0AGD has reo
tired aft er eight years of tr aveling
for the Swedish government
and putting a number of rare
co untries on the air. His last operation
was from Africa in the
spring, incll':Hng Guinea Bissau
J5AG, Swaziland SM0AGDI3D6,
Botswana A22GD, and Rwanda
9X5l E. Erik was in another halfdozen
co untries but could not
secure operating permi ssion.
From the four above-mentioned
spots he made 9500 contacts, 95
percent on CWo ost.s fo r all
Erik's operations go to Joergen
Svensson SM3CXS, Berghemsvagen
Sweden.
Another CW goodi e in July
was AI3EJKX6 on Kwajalein,
Marshall Islands. Dwight Sipler
was there about a week, used
equipment already in place for
the KX6DC club station, and
made 1700 contacts.. . 650 in
the States, 550 in Ja pan, and the
rest around the wor ld. His previous
operation in March from
Kwaj nett ed 1900 contacts, also
all on CWoSASE to Dwight Sip-
fer, 1879 Shaw Ave., Pitt sburgh
aSLs are stil eagerly sought
by many DXers for contacts with
YI1BGD Iraq and LU3ZY South
Sandwich. Both take several
months and probably more than
one request. The previously published
routes for these two are
val id, but slow.
There is talk of an upcoming
operation from Iraq, by Jordanian
amateurs along wit h the
Iraqis, to happen in September.
If it happens, the call will be
YI1JY and OSLs will be handled
by WA3HUP. Nothing has been
forthcoming on Heard Island,
but expectations are tor a December
or January operati on to
last about two weeks. And there
is talk of a possible operation
from 70 Sout h Yemen, also
around December or Janu ary.
Hugh Vandegrif t WA4WME, a
member of the 1978 Clippe rton
expedition team, responded to
our sugges tion back in August
that OXCC cred it might be
granted to someone who puts a
very rare spot on the air. Hugh
says "the real thrill of being a
DXpedit ioner is not gett ing a
'freebie,' but hearin g your own
stat ion (regardless of the operator)
and know ing that you are
hearing something that you put
together yourself." Prett y hard
to argue with t hat, Hug h.
WA4WME has worked his own
sta tion from 128 countries while
abroad! His lett er concludes
with our quot ation of the month:
"There are only 19 countries that
are DXpeditions .. . all the rest
are vacations."
Comments on how easy it is
to make DXCC th ese days
broug ht a lett er from anoth er
old -timer, W9lTV in Chicago .
Joe has just completed working
a hundred countries with his
five-Watt Argonaut and noth ing
more than a vertical on 20, 15,
and 10 meters. His list of the
hundred is about half CW and
half SSB, about two-t hirds on 10
meters, one-third on 15, and a
handf ul on 20_ In conjunction
with our work on The OX Bulletin
, we get regular reports from
WA2JOC, who uses an Argonaut
and beam, and works really
rare stuff, right through pileups
and all.
Bob Beach W8lCZ penned a
lett er from 33,000 feet, on his
way to Ascension Island. Bob
travels on milta ry transport s to
various worldwide assignments ,
but never knows enough in advance
to publi cize his upcoming
operatio ns. He has been on from
T h ul e, Gree n la nd, G uam,
Hawaii, Peru, and as Z08RB
Ascension Island. He carries a
tran sceiver and a collapsible
whip ante nna, getting on the air
whenever possible.
Next month is a Sl manager
list time again . Until then, keep
the lett ers and photos coming.
Thanks!
