Evaluation – assesses a student’s ability to critically review the law’s attempts to achieve just, fair and equitable<br />

outcomes to issues, and to make justified conclusions on the suitability of legal outcomes and their social<br />

implications.<br />

Communication and Research Skills – assesses a student’s ability to select, organise and present in<strong>for</strong>mation<br />

effectively in a variety of genres, using legal terminology proficiently.<br />

Assessment Techniques<br />

Students are assessed in a variety of ways, with the main <strong>for</strong>ms being short response, extended response,<br />

inquiry/research, response to stimulus and non-written presentations.<br />

Year 11:<br />

1. Short Response Test<br />

2. In Class Essay (600 - 800 words; research preparation necessary)<br />

3. Non-written presentation (15 – 20 minute group re-enactment of a court case)<br />

4. Inquiry task (1000 word analytical essay)<br />

5. Short Response and Extended Response Exam (includes a 300 word essay)<br />

6. Unseen Essay (500 – 600 word analytical essay written under exam conditions)<br />

Year 12:<br />

1. Inquiry task (1500 word analytical essay)<br />

2. Short Response Test<br />

3. Independent Study<br />

4. Unseen Essay (600 – 800 word analytical essay written under exam conditions)<br />

5. Non-written presentation (8 -10 minute; individual)<br />

6. In Class Essay (800 - 1000 words; research preparation necessary)<br />

Additional In<strong>for</strong>mation<br />

During the Year 11 course, students will participate in an excursion to the courts to enable them to see the legal<br />

system in practice. Guest speakers are also utilised during the two-year course to encourage community<br />

interactions and supplement classroom learning.<br />

Legal Studies is a subject that is relevant to everyday life ad which allows students to investigate, discuss and be<br />

in<strong>for</strong>med of current legal issues. However, there is a considerable amount of reading and writing involved in this<br />

subject. Students will achieve highly in this subject if they are hard-working, enthusiastic, inquisitive and enjoy<br />

reading and learning.<br />
