RECREATION STUDIES<br />

Why study Recreational Studies?<br />

Recreation Studies is an Authority-Registered subject that examines the effects of recreation on individuals and<br />

communities, investigates the role of physical activity in maintaining a healthy lifestyle, evaluates strategies to<br />

promote health and safety, and develops interpersonal and group dynamics.<br />

Prerequisites<br />

A “C” Level of Achievement in Year 10 Sport and Recreation.<br />

An interest in physical fitness and recreation pursuits.<br />

Aims<br />

Recreation aims to develop an awareness and understanding of various recreational and health and safety<br />

pursuits through:<br />

Participating in and promoting a positive attitude to recreational and sporting fitness<br />

Acquiring and applying knowledge about sport and recreation in the community<br />

Promoting risk awareness<br />

Evaluating personal and group cohesiveness<br />

Course content<br />

Theory<br />

1. Recreation, you and the community – examining<br />

the effects of recreation on individuals and<br />

communities<br />

2. Physical activity and healthy lifestyle –<br />

investigating the role of physical activity in<br />

maintaining good health<br />

3. Safety, risk awareness and health concerns –<br />

evaluating strategies to promote health and safety<br />

Practical<br />

Bronze Medallion<br />

Survival / Camping techniques<br />

Games organisation / Coaching<br />

Futsal / Indoor soccer<br />

Fitness / Gym<br />

Tennis<br />

Target sports: Bowling / Lawn Bowls /<br />

Bocce / Mini golf / Aquatics<br />

4. Interpersonal and group dynamics – investigating<br />

personal and interpersonal skills to achieve goals<br />

Assessment<br />

The student’s Exit level of achievement will be based on her ability to:<br />

Understand the theoretical concepts of the course and apply them to practical components<br />

Develop and evaluate skills in the practical components of the course – games and sport<br />

Participation and involvement in all activities including the Athletics Carnival and Year 8 games<br />

Half of the allocated time will be given to practical activities. Theoretical and practical components are<br />

intertwined and depend on each other <strong>for</strong> a successful outcome.<br />
