The Further Education Reasoning Test Digital (FERT Digital) is a
computer based standardised assessment that measures key cognitive
abilities and can be used to identify student potential and learning styles.
The test measures the three principal forms of reasoning – verbal, non
verbal and quantitative, allowing the pupil to be tested on the full range
of abilities in a single session
It is designed to assess the potential of students who are entering, or
are in sixth form, further or higher education colleges. The results give
an indication of how students assimilate new information and highlight
their thinking skills above and beyond their formal literacy and
mathematical abilities.

REASONING
The Reasoning 5-7 Test Series is
an effective way of assessing
both verbal and non-verbal
reasoning in primary school
pupils. It helps to assess their
future potential and acts as a
reliable baseline test to inform
teachers about the cognitive
abilities of their pupils. It is a
standardised assessment series
that tests pupils’ facility with
language and content-free visual
information to measure their wider
reasoning ability.
Reasoning 5-7 doesn’t require any reading by the pupils, with the verbal
section comprising orally-administered questions and pictorial response
options. Non-Verbal Reasoning 6 and 7 also involve no reading and
provide insight into the abilities of those who struggle with reading, who
seem to lack motivation, or who have English as an additional language.
The results give an indication of how pupils assimilate new information, and
highlight their skills in verbal thinking above and beyond their formal literacy
abilities. They also highlight pupils’ abilities to acquire new concepts and
information that may not be evident from their usual class work.
