Risks must be identified and strategies developed to minimise them, including updating weather<br />

forecasts.<br />

No swimming should be allowed unless specifically planned. (See section 4.9) Planning should<br />

include:<br />

delineation of roles and responsibilities of the adults<br />

an emergency evacuation plan including communication procedures<br />

ways to minimise the groups impact on the environment.<br />

Leaders must ensure anglers have adequate sun protection. A First Aid kit must be available along<br />

with emergency equipment such as:<br />

<br />

<br />

throwing line<br />

flotation device<br />

spare clothing.<br />

It is recommended that safety glasses be used – it is mandatory for fly fishing. It is also<br />

recommended that barbless hooks be used for all fishing.<br />

Lifejackets meeting Australian Standard Specification for Level 100 or 50 (AS4758) (previously PFD<br />

type 1 or 2) must be worn by anglers fishing in rivers beside deep or fast flowing water.<br />

No person should use waders unless they are wearing a flotation device capable of supporting the<br />

person. People who use waders should have undergone a self-rescue training program. If waders<br />

are worn they should be firmly belted around the waist. Waders should not be used in a boat.<br />

Approval<br />

No specific requirements beyond the Planning Requirements For All Off Campus Activities described<br />

at the beginning of these procedures, and those determined by the school’s or college’s risk<br />

management plan for the off campus activity.<br />

Supervision<br />

No specific requirements beyond the Planning Requirements For All Off Campus Activities described<br />

at the beginning of these procedures, and those determined by the school’s or college’s risk<br />

management plan for the off campus activity.<br />

Names and a head count of all participants must be checked and recorded at the beginning and at<br />

the end of the excursion. Regular head counts should also be carried out during the excursion.<br />

Equipment<br />

Leaders must ensure anglers have clothing, footwear and equipment appropriate to the activity as<br />

well as adequate food and water.<br />

Appropriate emergency communication equipment (satellite phone, mobile phone, EPIRB etc.) should<br />

be available in remote locations.<br />
