The trip leader must fully brief guides and assistants about the program, the participants, safety<br />

procedures and the emergency plan.<br />

The methods and particular communication calls to be used on the river must be made plain to all<br />

participants.<br />

River flow and dynamics must be known and communicated to all participants.<br />

A comprehensive First Aid kit must be carried. Trips with more than 20 participants and guides<br />

should carry two First Aid kits.<br />

Approval<br />

No specific requirements beyond the Planning Requirements For All Off Campus Activities described<br />

at the beginning of these procedures, and those determined by the school’s or college’s risk<br />

management plan for the off campus activity.<br />

Consent<br />

A signed Consent form for Aquatic (water-based) Activity is mandatory and if there is no signed<br />

consent form obtained the student must not undertake the activity.<br />

Supervision<br />

No specific requirements beyond the Planning Requirements For All Off Campus Activities described<br />

at the beginning of these procedures, and those determined by the school’s or college’s risk<br />

management plan for the off campus activity.<br />

Names and a head count of all participants must be checked and recorded at the beginning and at<br />

the end of the excursion. Regular head counts must also be carried out during the excursion.<br />

Qualifications/Experience<br />

Trip leaders and/or guides should have either an award of the Australian Board of Canoe Education<br />

Award Scheme or equivalent, including one of:<br />

<br />

a Basic River Guide<br />

a White Water Rafting Guide (proficiency).<br />

If a group is led from a kayak, the kayaker must also be one of:<br />

Qualified as a Level 2 or 3 Instructor (White Water)<br />

Qualified with the AQF Outdoor Recreation Certificate 4<br />

<br />

Confident of having satisfied a process of skill acquisition, at least equivalent to that<br />

described by the relevant NORPTP units.<br />

Assistant guides/assisting leaders should have relevant rafting experience an group management<br />

skills, equivalent to the AQF Outdoor Recreation Certificate 3 with specialisations in rafting.<br />

It is recommended that every trip leader and assistant leader/guide should hold a current Provide<br />

First Aid certificate (HLTAID003).<br />
