‘Round the Word Flight Delayed NEWS
AEROSPACE
Solar Impulse 2 grounded in Hawaii until 2016
Solar Impulse (Lausanne, Switzerland)
reported in the wake of the Solar Impulse 2’s
(Si2) historic flight from Nagoya Japan to
Hawaii on July 15 that damage to the plane’s
batteries due to overheating during the
record-breaking ocean crossing will require
repairs that will keep the composites-intensive,
solar-powered airplane, and copilots
Bertrand Piccard and André Borschberg, in
Hawaii until early spring 2016.
Although the airplane performed very well
during the five-day, five-night (117-hour, 52-
minute) flight, unanticipated temperature
increases occurred in the batteries during
daily, planned quick ascents to and descents
from 8,535m altitudes in the tropical climate,
due to the high climb rate and an over
insulation of the gondolas that contain the
batteries.
Repairs reportedly will take several months. In parallel,
the Solar Impulse engineering team will study options for
better cooling and heating processes on long flights. The
round-the-world mission is expected to resume in early
April 2016. Si2 will depart for the US West Coast, stopping
in Arizona, then, crossing the US to New York City before
making the Atlantic crossing to Europe and then returning
to its point of departure in Abu Dhabi.
