Stiffer, Lighter, and Faster: How the Lotus F1
team is Pushing the Limits with Composites
DATE AND TIME:
September 30, 2015
2:00 PM EST
PRESENTER
EVENT DESCRIPTION:
Formula 1 (F1) racing pushes the limits of mechanical and human possibilities,
crossing the boundaries between driving and flying with speeds up to 220 mph/354
kmh and forces that can top 5 Gs. With the cars heavily dependent on the use of
advanced materials, most notable carbon composites, more often than not it is the
choice and behavior of those materials that determine performance. For the Lotus F1
team (Enstone, U.K.), optimizing performance is a composites engineering balancing
act supported by a large set of engineering tools and processes. In this webinar, Ian
Goddard will discuss how the Lotus F1 team meets the demands of a pressure-filled
design cycle with the help of the Fibersim portfolio of software for composites
engineering from Siemens PLM Software to make the ‘perfect’ car stiffer, lighter and
faster year after year.
IAN GODDARD
Senior CAE Engineer,
Lotus F1 Team
PARTICIPANTS WILL LEARN:
• Best practices of composite engineering
• How cross-departmental communication between design, analysis and manufacture
enables part and process optimization
• What the key issues are that need to be addressed by engineering software to efficiently
engineer composite components
• How Siemens PLM Fibersim software extends beyond F1 with commonalities shared across
high-volume automotive and aerospace
