Adventurers around the world took up the challenge to free dive with
the great whites, to prove their courage. However, Dogmire didn’t like
the fact humans were changing the nature of the beast, with this risky
extreme water-sport. He knew that it could be destined for a calamity.
These animals were not pets and still had a primeval instinct to kill for
food. Although humans weren’t on the menu, some people went into
the water, and to get more of a thrill, imitated their food source, the
seal. Dogmire feared mistaken identity might occur, with someone
getting killed, and his sharks getting the blame.
Dogmire went onto the deck. A crewmember hurled a float attached to
some tuna overboard. A large dorsal fin cut the water as 'Penelope'
made her appearance and took the offering. Previously, with a hook
attached, they would have brought her aboard to tag, but as all the
sharks were now known, the food was only a welcome back treat.
This year the team’s target was a young female. They'd previously
attached a small fin-cam to a pregnant female called ‘Mabel,’ and had
watched her given birth earlier in the season. They expected her pup to
come to the island, where they could tag the new addition. They knew
that Mabel was somewhere in the vicinity. It was assumed that great
whites had their pups, and then deserted them to fend for themselves, or
occasionally eat them. Alan Dogmire however, discovered that for the
first few weeks, the offspring followed their mothers, although
remaining a short distance away. Dogmire proved this theory on many
occasions, so knew that where Mabel was, her pup would be
somewhere in the depths close by.
“Alan, we have a problem,” came a voice over Dogmire’s radio.
Dogmire made his way below decks.
“What is it?” he asked, as he went into the control centre.
