“Maybe that’s where she's feeding,” Ryan suggested.
“Impossible,” said Alan. “Nothing gets into, or out of the pens.” He
went on to explain. “The vast enclosures are two walls of thick metal.
The first wall houses the filter and pump systems, which filter
everything larger than a water molecule into a kilometre wide reservoir.
The lifeless seawater then flushes into the main holding tank through
small, but numerous vents. This keeps the water oxygenated and
moving, replicating current.”
Alan instructed the V-com to enlarge an image, which showed an aerial
picture of the Red-Drum fish pens.
“The holding pens are immense water fortresses attached to the seabed,
and as you can see, this one is as large as a town.”
“What are all those small objects?” asked Pinky.
“They are the pens trawlers. They harvest the fish.” said Alan.
“And that building?” Ryan asked, noticing a large structure at the edge
of the pen.”
“That is the processing plant, where they control, monitor and move the
day’s harvest and control the fish’s development,” said Alan. He
pointed out a runway.“They also fly in and out daily with deliveries.
That processing plant is the size of a village.”
“So how do they feed the fish, if there is nothing to feed them on?”
asked Church.
“Synthetic, dried algae and steroid supplements.” explained Alan.
“Made here.” He pointed to a large floating building slowly sailing
around the pens.
