Ryan and Jenny felt strange as they communicated with each other by<br />
thought. They discovered a new side to this extra gift; they could focus<br />
on just one person to communicate with, blocking out anyone else. This<br />
infuriated Pinky as she tried unsuccessfully to eavesdrop telepathically<br />
on them, but looking at Ryan’s dopey grin, she knew he was happy.<br />
They arrived at a small jetty, where a jet-boat waited to transport them<br />
to the Ocean Guardian VI. Pinky was glad to be getting out of the SUV<br />
after the long journey. She was bored being ignored by Ryan and Jenny,<br />
who seemed to be getting on too well. Pinky was first onto the small<br />
craft as the others walked over and jumped aboard.<br />
The jet boat sped along at 50 knots and after an hour they approached a<br />
white vessel, with Ocean Guardian VI stencilled in black letters on the<br />
side. The vessel bobbed gently as they pulled up alongside. Church<br />
looked down through the water, at the anchor embedded in sand,<br />
surrounded by what looked a large area of small grey rocks.<br />
“A dead coral reef.” said Alan, noticing Church looking. “The same as<br />
the rest of the planet; polluted and dredged with rake boards.”<br />
“What?” asked Church.<br />
“Rake boards,” repeated Alan. “Large sharp Kevlar struts towed behind<br />
trawlers, ripping out the coral. They expose the fish living there, before<br />
other trawlers with nets then come along and vacuum them up.<br />
Effective but devastating. I have pictures of what it used to look like”<br />
said Alan. “I will show you them, as well as other reefs and what they<br />
look like now. You'll be shocked”
