53. WORK-RELATED HEALTH RISKS<br />

Definition:<br />

1) Number of employees who think that their health or safety is at risk because of work and<br />

working conditions.<br />

2) Number of employees who think their health is affected by work and working conditions.<br />

Calculation:<br />

1) WORKHEALTH project: percent of respondents (employees) answering positively to the<br />

European Survey on Working Conditions question “Do you think your health or safety is at<br />

risk because of your work, or not?”<br />

2a) WORKHEALTH project: percent of respondents (employees) answering positively to<br />

the European Survey on Working Conditions questions “Do you think your health or safety<br />

is at risk because of your work, or not?” and “Does your work affect your health, or not? If<br />

Yes, how does it affect your health?” The question about the impact of work on one’s health<br />

(several answers possible) refer to: Hearing problems, problems with vision, skin problems,<br />

backache, headaches, stomach ache, muscular pains in shoulders and neck, muscular pains<br />

in upper limbs, muscular pains in lower limbs, respiratory difficulties, heart disease, injury,<br />

stress, overall fatigue, sleeping problems, allergies, anxiety, irritability, trauma, other or<br />

“work improves health”.<br />

2b) Percent of respondents answering positively to the EHIS question HS.9 (which is asked<br />

only for respondents currently working or having worked in the past.): Is any of the diseases<br />

you had in the past 12 months caused or made worse by your job or by work you have done<br />

in the past? 1. No, I had no disease in the past 12 months; 2. No, I had one or more disease<br />

in the past 12 months but they were not caused or made worse by my job; 3. Yes, I had at<br />

least one disease in the past 12 months which was caused or made worse by my job.<br />

2c) Percent of respondents who have at least one physical or psychological health problem<br />

caused or made worse by work, derived from 2007 Labour Force Survey ad-hoc module on<br />

accidents at work and work-related health problems indicator 214: Illness(es), disability(ies)<br />

or other physical or psychic health problem(s), apart from accidental injuries, suffered by<br />

the person during the past 12 months (from the date of the interview) and that was (were),<br />

caused or made worse by work: 1. None; 2. One; 3. Two or more. (This question is asked<br />

only for respondents currently working or having worked in the past 12 months).<br />

Notes: Subjective assessment of risks at the workplace.<br />

2c) Also the type of the most serious complaint caused or made worse by work is asked (10<br />

categories), indicator 215/216.<br />

54. SOCIAL SUPPORT<br />

Definition: Extent of social support measured by Oslo-3 Social Support Scale (OSS-3).<br />

Social support is defined as the perceived availability of people whom the individual trusts<br />

and who make one feel cared for, loved, esteemed and valued as a person. It is a strategic<br />

concept in understanding the maintenance of health and the development of (mental and<br />

somatic) health problems, as well as their prevention. Social support is determined by factors<br />

at the individual as well as the social level. Oslo-3 is a composite scale measuring perception<br />

of both support and social network.<br />
