girls’ lunch Garden Jo’burg food blogger, Di Bibby, hosts a lunch in her gazebo to celebrate the arrival of spring TEXT LISA VAN DER KNAAP PHOTOGRAPHS ANDREA CALDWELL THESE RECIPES ARE SUPPLIED BY THE ENTERTAINERS, AND WHILE EVERY EFFORT IS MADE TO ENSURE THEY ARE CORRECT, THEY HAVEN’T BEEN TESTED BY GARDEN AND HOME
Sonja Dos Ramos and Tippy Haird When you think about the most special moments in your life, they’re invariably around a table with food, surrounded by the people that you love,” says food blogger and recipe developer, Di Bibby of Bryanston, Jo’burg. Once a fashion designer, the cooking side of her career came about by default. “When I worked in fashion, I travelled a lot; once I had my girls, however, I chose to be at home and preparing meals became another creative outlet,” she explains. “Whether it’s food or fashion, it starts the same way: you begin with a concept and a style, then add colour and texture.” Initially, she started baking, then catered for small functions and weddings. “At a dinner party, friends of mine asked if I’d show them how to cook and it went so well I now hold monthly cooking classes in my kitchen. It’s really relaxed as people can share ideas and tuck into dishes around the table.” Di keeps the classes intimate (15 people maximum) and to a theme. Her Italian class is always well attended and she also offers courses on alternative baking (using less refined ingredients) and Middle Eastern cooking. “I want to get people inspired and excited about food and that comes with confidence in the kitchen.” That’s one of the reasons she started her blog, Bibby’s Kitchen @ 36. “With blogging, you need to tell the story of food: the journey.” MENU POMEGRANATE MOJITOS GRUYÈRE AND POPPY SEED WAFERS WITH LABNEH, LEMON-CHILLI OIL AND DUKKAH QUINOA, SPINACH AND CHERRY SALAD WITH ROASTED NUTS AND GOAT’S CHEESE OVEN-ROASTED CORIANDER AND HONEY CHICKEN PECAN NUT, TAHINI AND HALVA ICE CREAM Di Bibby Di loves to bake cakes – everything from French-style galette to Black Forest pavlova – because it’s her chance to get really artistic and creative. Her Cake Friday has become extremely popular. It’s a tradition that started with her daughters, Skylar (16), and Sabrina (14), and her husband, Darren rather enjoys it too. “Every Friday, I’d pick the girls up from school and we’d bake a cake together. I incorporated this into my blog and readers can’t get enough; it’s their treat at the end of the week,” she says. Although Di blogs for thousands of people, she prefers to entertain on a smaller scale. Her intimate spring lunch for friends takes place in a gorgeous little gazebo that her father-inlaw made, and she’s turned it into an alfresco dining area with a vintage steel table and benches, and pink and green accessories. Di’s favourite way to entertain is with generous platters of interesting salads made with wholesome grains, vegetables, cheeses and nuts − usually served with marinated grilled fish or chicken. To finish, there’s always an indulgent dessert. “The menu I chose today reflects the type of food I love to eat: food made from scratch that’s flavourful, slightly different and very delicious.” gardenandhome.co.za | OCTOBER 2015 141
