Heart of the home
When publicist Jo Giles of Frontpage Communications decided
to renovate her family’s Parkview, Jo’burg home, the patio was
a major consideration. As she and her husband Quinton love to
entertain, they wanted an easy flow between the patio and the
rest of the living areas. This wasn’t as straightforward as they
had imagined. “There was no access for heavy machinery to
the back garden so our builder had to dig the patio and cart the
sand away by hand,” recalls Jo.
The new space has a wisteria-covered pergola at one end,
which shades a white-washed dining table and benches.
The floor here consists of large pavers interplanted with
groundcover, which link this area to the garden. At the
other end is a covered sitting area with a fireplace, which Jo
furnished with comfy couches and wicker occasional chairs
from Coricraft. “It’s ideal for lazy afternoons lying on the sofa
with a book,” she says.
