BEFORE A vine romance When Tanja and Bruce Beyers first moved into their Rivonia, Jo’burg home, the outdoor living area consisted of a small poky space covered with a grapevine. “My vision for the area was a relaxed Cape feel where you could enjoy long, lazy lunches,” recalls Tanja, an interior designer at Profurn Contracts. While there was enough space under the existing pergola for a dining table, steps leading down from the upper level meant there was no room for furniture where you could sit and relax. The solution was to remove the steps and replace them with a built-in water feature and timber-clad bench. This created enough space for hardwearing wroughtiron furniture, which Tanja dresses with a selection of stylish cushions. To make the patio an extension of the living areas, they installed a bank of stacking doors in the dining room to connect the two spaces and used the same natural clay quarry tiles outdoors. “We live out here in summer, especially on hot evenings.
