R: it was an indication of everything we’d
done and what we wanted to achieve, which
was basically not sit on the laurels of the first
two records for the rest of our lives and create
something new that people felt in their hearts as
much they probably did with the old two. And
we’ve done that, and I don’t think many people do
that, or get away with it.
Q: as well, its ten years since
Employment.
Q: your fellow judge Tom Jones is
also doing a few of the race course
shows as well this summer. Has it
ever come up in a conversation
recently?
R: no. It’s funny because we talk about
everything and nothing. Like, I’m not one of
those people that’s gonna ask Will.i.am to remix
a record or Rita to appear on ‘Falling Awake’.
R: ten years to the week, yeah.
Q: now, I apologise for the next
batch. Honestly there’s only like
three of them, but it’s gonna be
the obligatory Voice ones.
R: I was gonna say, thing is now, I’m telling
these kids on that TV show that I do that,
all these things that I’ve learnt about, don’t
forget to enjoy it. Don’t forget to appreciate
every single moment and also the thing we
were saying about, if you want it you can
have a career in music. The level of which
you’re at, you might not be U2, but you can
do it. You might have to have another job
to sustain your career in music, but you can
do it. And, as soon as I kind of like thought
about reminding myself that, that yeah I
might have to get another job one day to keep
the band that I love being in something I still do
and think about every day. And then when I did
because I got a job on the telly show, but then
it’s all a gamble isn’t it, it could have gone terribly
wrong.
W: with that, obviously there’s the story about
David Grohl doing a swift turnaround when he was
saying about reality music shows and was like ‘oh
yeah, well actually I am a judge’.
R: ‘cause essentially, we’re still the band we
always were and we’re a band, we’re pretty
normal. You know all these collaborations and all
these things that go on, it’s not very us, I don’t
think we’re that into that kind of thing. We like
the unit we’ve got, it’s worked for a long time
and even though we might have had a hiccup
when Nick left, I think we kinda pulled it back
together but we, I don’t think it’s very us. Saying
that, you can whip that out of the archives when
we do do a collaboration.
