Wines
of South
Africa
It is believed that human life
started in South Africa about
150,000 to 200,000 years ago.
BY ‘WINE BUFF’ FRED FISHER
DNA analysis supports this. A
77,000 year old mathematical
tablet was found in a cave near
Blombas in the Southern Cape,
From this long history of human activity it took
until the 1600’s for vine growing and winemaking
to take effect. Jan Van Riebeck was the first
Dutch Governor in 1652 to grow grapes, which
led to making wine in 1659. This settlement
supported Dutch Traders journeying on their way
to the East for the spice trade.
In 1688 French Huguenots arrived and settled in
Franchhoek, nowadays a top wine area. It is not
surprising then that most grapes grown nowadays
are of Classic European varieties and mainly
French in origin.
