1976San Francisco Mayor George Moscone 

appoints Harvey Milk to the Board of Permit 

Appeals, making Milk the first openly 

gay city commissioner in the United States. 

Milk decides to run for the California State 

Assembly and Moscone is forced to fire him 

from the Board of Permit Appeals after just 

five weeks. Milk loses the State Assembly race 

by fewer than 4,000 votes. Believing the Alice 

B. Toklas LGBT Democratic Club will never 

support him politically, Milk co-founds the 

San Francisco Gay Democratic Club after his 

election loss. 

1980 The democrats begin fighting for gay 

rights. 

At the 1980 Democratic National Convention 

held at New York City’s Madison Square 

Garden, Democrats took a stance supporting 

gay rights, adding the following to their plank: 

“All groups must be protected from discrimination 

based on race, color, religion, national 

origin, language, age, sex or sexual orientation.”

Zane Rhys, Gallery Director LOCAL COLOR

The newest art gallery in town has opened 

on Arenas Road. The new gallery, LOCAL 

COLOR, is a welcome addition to a street 

that is a popular meeting place and hang 

out for the LGBT community. Local Color 

was a former laundromat located next to 

and owned by the owner of Street Bar. 

The laundromat had not been very productive 

during the past few years and a 

discussion of what it could become evolved 

into the art gallery idea. The art gallery will 

literally, bring a touch of color and culture 

to the street. The restaurants, bars, clothing 

and gift shops that occupy the street will 

also benefit from another enterprise that 

will attract a diversity of people. 

Zane Rhys is the director of Local Color. 

Utilizing his abilities as an artist and entrepreneur, 

Zane has taken a laundromat and 

creatively transformed it into a functionally 

organized art gallery. The first show was 

comprised of several artists who are also 

employed at the Street Bar. They are also 

artists who work in a variety of art media 

including two and three dimensional art 

and photography. 

The current show, which opened on Saturday, 

February 13 has the theme of Modernism. 

This corresponds with the Modernism 

show and Palm Springs Art Fair, which is a 

widely popular attraction to the art, design, 

and architectural interests that have converged 

on Palm Springs from throughout 

the United States and several foreign countries 

this past week.

George Washington Carver was born into 

slavery in southwestern Missouri during the 

Civil War. A sickly child, Carver threw himself 

into education and was admitted to Iowa’s 

Simpson College as the only African-American 

student, eventually joining the faculty 

after graduating. He would then head the 

agriculture department at Tuskegee University, 

where he devised agricultural innovations, 

including new uses for peanuts and sweet 

potatoes, His work paved the way for modern 

advances in biofuels . Gay rumors followed 

Carver at Tuskegee, which were not dispelled 

when he and his research assistant, Austin 

Wingate Curtis, Jr., began living together.

JERSEY’S JOURNAL by Jersey Shore 

I have the option to do anything I want. 

Life is mine for the taking, so let me get 

off my ass and see what I can accomplish. 

The worst that can happen is that it 

doesn’t happen. Maybe something completely 

different will happen. Different 

isn’t bad. Different could be a fabulous 

new accomplishment. One you never 

knew you wanted. That’s the great thing 

about this life, you can do what you want 

and/or desire. it’s up to you to make it 

happen. Do you want to travel? Well you 

can do that. Do want to get married? Depending 

on how picky or lucky you are, 

you can do that. My obvious point is, you 

can do that. 

It’s your life and if you want it a certain 

way, you have that option. Yes, I realize 

life is also a test that is bigger, longer, and 

harder than the Board Exam. I would assume. 

But, the great thing about your life 

is the ability to at least try. I’m not saying 

it’s easy or we’ll all be Pop stars, but you 

have the option to try. I’m not Guy Gaga 

or Jerz Lopez, but I am happy what I am 

doing, and even though I’m not a spring 

chicken, I still have time in my life to do 

what I want to. We all have that option. 

Unfortunately, I’m a lazy ass and life as 

it is consumes so much time, but if you 

want a different life then all you have 

to do is try. You will never achieve your 

goals if you don’t at least try. Plus, the 

journey could be just as satisfying. Just 

saying.
