Milnrow & Newhey March 2016

As we mentioned last week, former resident Philip and his 

wife Barbara recently moved to Llandudno after 35 years of 

living in Milnrow. Philip is still keen to keep in touch with 

the area and one way in which he can do is through the 

magazine. This month he has writes about the history of 

the resort in which he is now living. 

With Spring around the corner, we are hoping to hear from 

other local residents who might be involved in forthcoming 

local events. We have already been contacted by the 

Carnival committee and will be featuring this very popular 

event in forthcoming issues so watch this space!

The next Milnrow, Newhey & Firgrove Local Area Forum will be held 

on Thursday 24th March 2016 

from 7.00pm at Milnrow Cricket Club, Harbour Lane, Milnrow.

Guided Walks & Tours 

The Syke Walk and Talk Group meet every Monday at 1.00 pm 

and Friday 10.00am at Syke Methodist Chapel where there will be

are 2 levels on the walk on Monday, a high quick walk and a slower 

one. There are also three levels on a Friday. A high fast walk, an 

intermediate walk and a slower one if needed. So there is something 

to suit everyone and all abilities.

Letter

After 35 years of living in Milnrow we moved to Llandudno last 

December. The motivations were many and varied, but basically 

we needed to live somewhere that was flat! As the third most 

visited seaside resort in the country most people will have been 

to Llandudno, even if just once, and that was the case with myself 

before beginning to look for properties here! 

Llan is Welsh for church or parish and in this case Llandudno is the modern day 

version of Llan Tudno or the church of Saint 

Tudno. Tudno lived and died in the 500s and 

Tudno’s church was built in the 6th Century 

by him on the Great Orme, and a working 

church still occupies the same spot today. 

This area has been occupied for thousands 

of years and the 4,000 year old copper 

mine on the Great Orme testifies to the 

main activity around here for millennia, but 

the town itself was deliberately created as 

a holiday resort from the late 1840s by the 

Llandudno from the Great Orme: the layout of 

Llandudno in a grid pattern is said to have 

inspired Lewis Carol to come up with the chess 

board effect in Alice in Wonderland 

land owners, the Mostyn family, and the 

fabric of the town as we know it was 

established by the mid-1870s. Its popularity 

was aided and abetted by the connection 

to the national rail networks and the 

establishment of a station at Llandudno in 1858. 

The ideas, and layout as a resort, put together in 

the early Victorian times survive today and are 

shielded from out-and-out development by the 

Mostyn family and strict byelaws.

Another writer that has a lasting 

legacy in Llandudno is Carmen Sylva, 

which was the pen name the then 

Queen Elisabeth of Romania used for 

her prolific writings in four languages! 

In 1890 she asked the Prince of 

Wales, Albert and the future Edward 

Vll, to suggest a secluded and quiet 

place for a convalescence. “Bertie” 

had the temerity to recommend 

Llandudno and on arrival the Queen 

was really annoyed to find that 

Llandudno was a bustling holiday 

resort! So it was Lord and Lady 

Mostyn to the rescue to befriend her 

and introduce her to the charms of the 

area. This Queen Elisabeth stayed 5 

weeks and almost became a tourist 

attraction in herself. Today we have 

Carmen Sylva Road and Roumania 

Drive and Crescent, several shops still 

bear the “by Royal Appointment” with 

the Romanian royal family coat of arms, 

alas the Queen of Roumania Hotel is 

now renamed the Adelphi. Her leaving 

words described Llandudno as a 

“haven of peace” which survives today 

as the town’s motto, and will do very 

nicely thank you!

Springhill Hospice - 10th Birthday Hospice to Hospice Walk 

Springhill Hospice are delighted to confirm the date for this year’s 10th Birthday Hospice to 

Hospice Walk. Sunday 24th of April will see hundreds of walkers set off from Broad Lane to 

walk the event’s 7.25 mile circular route, stopping off for a brew half way around at Dr 

Kershaw’s Hospice in Oldham. 

For the last 10 years supporters from both hospices have 

walked 7.25 miles raising money for their respective 

charities and bringing greater awareness of palliative care 

to the communities of Rochdale and Oldham. 

Last year 300 walkers supporting Springhill raised over 

£11,500, an amount that broke event fundraising 

records! This year, in celebration of 10 Years of the 

Hospice to Hospice Walk, Springhill are asking 

supporters in the communities of Rochdale, Middleton 

and Heywood to take on the Hospice to Hospice Walk 

challenge, hoping to celebrate in style and smash that 

record. 

“This event is a really relaxed, family orientated walk, 

everyone walks at their own pace. Individuals, 

families, groups of friends, work colleagues, dogs, 

prams and wheelchair bound supporters all really 

enjoy taking part. 7.25 miles is quite a distance but 

not too far to be daunting. People take part for so 

many reasons, whether it be to give something back 

to the Hospice or as a goal in their New Year fitness 

regime” said Springhill Hospice’s Community 

Fundraiser Lillie Winterbottom. 

“It’s fantastic not only to see all our supporters set off from Springhill but to welcome Dr Kershaw’s walkers to 

Springhill for cuppa. When our supporters return from Dr Kershaw’s they are met with a hot soup, a sit down and 

huge Springhill Smile. This year supporters will receive an added bonus as everyone who takes part will receive a 

special 10th Birthday edition commemorative medal” added Lillie 

Entry to this event costs just £7 and all money raised goes directly to caring for patients diagnosed with a life limiting 

illness. The walk starts in Springhill’s beautiful grounds at 10.30 am and finishes with hot soup and a sit down in

Easter Chocolate Brownies 

Recipe from Heather Williams 

Ingredients 

Makes 12 

150g dark chocolate, chopped 

100g butter 

½ teaspoon vanilla extract 

300g caster sugar 

4 medium eggs 

150g self-raising flour 

Optional: 50g raisins or chopped stem 

ginger 

12 mini crème eggs or 12 mini Malteser 

bunnies 

Method 

Preheat oven to 180C, 160 fan or gas 4 

Base line a small swiss roll tin(27cm x 17cm x 3cm) with baking parchment 

Place chocolate and butter in a basin and microwave for 30 second blasts until melted or place basin over a pan of hot water 

and stir until melted. 

Stir in the vanilla extract and caster sugar, mix well 

Beat in the eggs one at a time and stir in the flour and ginger or sultanas 

Pour into prepared tin and smooth surface. Place unwrapped chocolates neatly on top pressing in slightly. 

Bake for 30 – 40 minutes until the mixture is set but still moist. Cool in the tin on a wire rack and cut into pieces. 

Serving suggestion – warm slightly in the microwave and serve with ice cream as a dessert

Police cannot pursue these individuals as they are not wearing 

helmets. It’s also difficult for us to identify the rider as they 

speed off when they see a patrol car or PCSO's on foot patrol 

most of the bikes are not taxed nor insured so the riders are 

committing further offences still. Members of Public can help 

us if they know who the riders are. By contacting us on 101 

and helping us to identify the riders, means we can summons 

them for driving offences and seize the bikes so they can be 

destroyed. 

Please contact us on 101 if you know of anyone causing a 

nuisance in your area on an Off-Road bike. We will work 

closely with partner agencies to deal with the youths and in 

some cases adults involved.

SPINNING POWER 

Again Rochdale and the Milnrow and Newhey ward are the 

innovators and developers for Greater Manchester and global 

energy. 

The Ellenroad Steam engine is now being run on 

special pellets which are from a renewable source. 

This system burns the pellets through a bio boiler to 

fuel the engine, the net result when subsidies are 

taken into account, is the more we steam the more 

we make, the result being a wonderful and historic 

piece of our local heritage. 

The story doesn’t stop there as energy prices and 

renewable energy are high on 

Rochdale’s priority list.

been involved in a New Utilities 

company developing for Greater 

Manchester, the proposals are for 

Greater Manchester to have its own 

Energy/Utilities Company and the 

profits to go back to the rate payers. 

Duncan Hannant said “It’s a great idea 

and it looks like we could go live within the next 24 months.” Other developments 

such as a more efficient wind turbine due to be installed in Heywood and the 

potential for it to be manufactured on Kingsway industrial Park are all positive 

innovations coming from within the Borough. 

Rochdale has become one of the lead local authorities on renewable energy and 

it’s our legacy from the industrial revolution, that’s helping us innovate and engineer 

our position, not only within Greater Manchester but Globally. Duncan says, “It’s the 

type of people we breed in the Pennines, determination and talent abound, in the 

area and we are starting to make our mark again with our ideas. I want Milnrow and 

Newhey people to keep pushing forward with their ideas and we will show the rest 

of the North what a Northern Power House looks like.” 

“It’s not just our heritage, it’s our destiny I want to ensure” said Duncan.

within the local media for up and coming events by Milnrow Amateur Dramatics 

(MAD) from the Engine House.

Grow up and act your age! 

Young people become more and more relevant in modern politics. 

Every month I try and write something for Streetwise that is both entertaining and 

informative. They say it’s best to write about what you know, about what is going on 

currently and about something that will keep the readers interest. So here’s what I’ve 

been up to. 

In my day job, one of the many things I do is work with unemployed young people, usually care leavers, 

and try and get them back into work. I fact, in most cases, it’s not “back” at all, as most have never 

worked. I’m not making any excuses for unemployment and most people’s circumstances are unique, but 

the longer you’re in it, the harder it becomes to get out of it. When you’re young and come from an 

unfortunate background, it’s doubly hard. Some of the work I do begins with looking at young people and 

their rights and responsibilities in society. We run a quiz called “At what age can you?” Here is a selection 

of questions: 

At what age can you… 

1. Go into a bar and order soft drinks? 

2. join the Armed Forces? 

3. Vote in a local election? 

4. Buy a lottery ticket? 

5. Drive a 50cc moped? 

6. Donate blood? 

7. Buy sparklers? 

8. Adopt a child? 

9. Give evidence in court? 

10. Apply for a helicopter licence?

People may also know that I chair a successful amateur dramatic group, who have a youth section. This 

year, they are taking centre stage in the next Curtain Theatre production called “A Slice of Saturday Night”. 

It’s all about being 17 years old and how we grow up, cope with relationships and feelings and make out 

transition into the world of adults. Admittedly it’s full of stereotypes and clichés, but there is the familiar 

understanding from the audience that “that’s what we all went through”. We made a policy decision about 

five years ago to ensure that at least three committee places in the society were held by members of the 

youth theatre. I.e. under 21 years. As well as getting the low down on teenage tastes and trends, it has 

proven to be a great long term investment in bringing through a new generation of young minds and new

volunteers into the organisation as a whole. Young 

people are at the heart of our decision making 

process- in fact every youth member has a casting 

vote at AGM the same as any adult member. 

I fully believe that whilst still needing and 

requiring our protection as children (under the 

age of 18) young people still have much to offer 

in forming the future. 

At the time of writing, 16 & 17 year olds will 

not be able to vote in the European referendum 

in June, (based financial on cost alone), but if 

we can learn anything from last years’ Scottish 

referendum, we should see that those in these 

limbo years can revitalise a debate, engage in 

politic dialogue and make tangible and 

meaningful decisions. Surely those aged 16 & 17 

today will be most impacted on being in Europe 

or not tomorrow? 

One youngster once said to me that he sick of 

being told at 17 that he should grow up and act 

his age and at the same time, be seen and not 

heard. 

In my many years of working with teenagers, 

I’ve never been less than amazed at the ability 

of young people to provide an alternative insight to a problem, a unique perspective 

to a situation or point out the adult futility in a debate. We live in a society where you can fight in a war but 

not wave a sparkler, but a lotto ticket but not a beer, and fly a helicopter but not rent a car. Maybe we need 

a bit more teenage insight….

Easter Bunny Bread 

Easter Bunny Bread 

Makes 6 

500g strong bread flour 

3 Teaspoons dried yeast 

3 Teaspoons salt 

375ml Water 

2 Tablespoon olive oil 

Extra flour for dusting 

2 Tablespoons Olive Oil 

2 Tablespoons Caster Sugar 

200g Marzipan 

Method 

1) Place the flour, yeast and salt in a mixer bowl with a dough 

hook, add the water and oil and put on a medium speed for 

approximately 5 minutes until the dough is well combined and 

kneaded. 

2) Place onto a lightly dusted work surface and knead for 

about 2 minutes until smooth. Place in a lightly oiled bowl, 

cover with a T towel and leave in a warm place for an hour to 

prove. 

3) After an hour tip back onto the work surface dusting with 

more flour to prevent it sticking and knock back. Divide into 6, 

knead each one briefly then place into lightly oiled round tins 

and place on a tray. Cover with a cloth and leave again for one 

hour until lightly risen. 

4) Remove the cloth and drizzle with olive oil. Bake in a hot 

oven at 180C for 8 minutes, open oven door then shower with 

sugar then return to the oven for a further 8 minutes. 

5) Remove from oven – leave to cool then garnish with 

marzipan and currants to resemble a rabbit.
