INCLUSION AT #ACPA16
Nations’ (Status and Non-Status), Métis, and Inuit peoples, as
well as the cultures of all of those nations who have contributed
to our inimitable history and heritage as a country; and
• Pluralism—Many cities in Canada such as Montréal, Vancouver
and Toronto are culturally and ethnically diverse. More than 20%
of our population is born outside of Canada, and we have the
highest diversity of all G8 countries, with over 200 languages
spoken. We celebrate people keeping and fostering their
cultural heritage. Canada also has a geographic and biological
diversity where each province has a distinctive climate,
geography, landscape, species, etc.
As student affairs professionals, much of our work is focused on
fostering the capacity of our students to be effective global citizens
– to understand the social impact of discrimination, prejudice,
and stereotyping, and to contribute to respectful and inclusive
communities. As an organization, we have an opportunity to be
role models. The Canadian Advisory Board for ACPA 2016 strongly
recommends that stereotypes and symbols, even those that are lighthearted
and affirmative (i.e. Moose, hockey players, Mounties, etc.),
are not the focus of promotional events that are meant to highlight
the excitement of ACPA coming to Canada. We recommend that
ACPA leaders and Convention attendees find positive ways to focus
on the diversity of Canada, rather than trying to encapsulate the
excitement in stereotypical symbols. We hope that ACPA will find a
way to celebrate both Canada and the excitement of internationalizing
the conference at its first time outside of the U.S.A. We also strongly
advise that respect and attention is paid to honouring and recognizing
Canada’s Indigenous peoples at appropriate times leading up to and
during the conference.
CONVENTION LEARNING CHALLENGES
Although there is no theme for ACPA 2016 convention, the following
six learning challenges have been put forward by ACPA and the 2016
Convention Planning Committee:
• Identify learning scenarios in uncommon places, including
and beyond traditional educational programs, to maximize
professional growth opportunities;
• Discuss global and contemporary critical concepts in higher,
post-secondary, and tertiary education;
• Examine perspectives on scholarship and practice to expand
viewpoints and apply new understandings;
• Demonstrate an increase in active use of the ACPA/NASPA
Professional Competencies;
• Construct meaningful connections with other student and
academic affairs and services professionals;
• And develop a plan to reflect on and take their learning back to
their professional home.
ETHICS
ACPA-College Student Educators International is an association
whose members are dedicated to enhancing the worth, dignity,
potential, and uniqueness of each individual within post-secondary
educational institutions and, thus, to the service of society. ACPA
members are committed to contributing to the comprehensive
education of students, protecting human rights, advancing knowledge
of student growth and development, and promoting the effectiveness
of institutional programs, services, and organizational units. As
a means of supporting these commitments, members of ACPA
subscribe to the stated principles and standards of ethical conduct.
Acceptance of membership in ACPA signifies that the member
understands the provisions of this statement.
