PRONOUNS
Pronouns, in place of a name, can represent an individual’s identity
and/or how a person wishes others address them. By providing your
pronoun when introducing yourself, asking someone for theirs, and
using their self-determined pronouns, you are modeling powerful ways
to be inclusive. Some examples of self-determined pronouns are they,
them, their, ze, zir, zem, ze, hir, hirs, she, her, hers, he, him, and his.
RECOMMENDATIONS FOR CREATING GLOBALLY-
INCLUSIVE CONTENT
In order to reflect and include ACPA’s global membership, presenters
should be mindful of language, attitudes, and behaviors when sharing
or presenting content. These recommendations aim to broaden the
lens of content beyond institutional, country, or regional context.
Presenters, facilitators, and leaders should:
1. Acknowledge the limitations of one’s own experience.
2. Listen to different perspectives, both personal and professional,
to increase cultural and intercultural competence. Be open to
being challenged by different cultural viewpoints and practices.
Include international perspectives and examples or invite those
in attendance to contribute their ideas.
3. Use language that can be understood by international
audiences. Be mindful of varying levels of comfort with the
English language and the use of country-specific student affairs
jargon. Explain terms, abbreviations, acronyms, and jargon.
4. Acknowledge the campus and country context from which you
approach the presentation. Mention limitations and what your
session will not address. Qualify examples that are potentially
unique, acknowledging that not all educators may face the
same challenges. This helps to avoid generalization between
institutions and countries.
5. Recognize that context includes the historical, political,
economic, and social realities that have contributed to
institutional and country circumstances.
6. Diversify the cultural groups that are referenced to include those
in country settings outside of North America.
7. Familiarize yourself with global practices in your content area.
Incorporate various approaches, perspectives, and practice.
8. Design presentation activities to be inclusive of individuals with
varying language levels and familiarity with the topic.
9. Encourage participants to develop cultural and intercultural
competence in themselves and their students to promote
internationalization of campus communities.
USE OF ENGLISH LANGUAGE
Montréal shares many cultural similarities of other major metropolitan
cities in North America and is the largest French-speaking city in
the world outside of Paris. This metropolis of 3.8 million people
offers dynamic energy, in both English and French. This text reflects
many versions of the English language taking in the consideration
for the many different dialects of English written and spoken by the
contributors.
