Cline is a winery th<strong>at</strong> has<br />
been a part of <strong>the</strong><br />
Surdyk’s story since long<br />
before I came on <strong>the</strong><br />
scene here, and for good<br />

reason. They make super interesting<br />
wines out of varietals both popular and<br />
obscure, and <strong>the</strong>y do so <strong>at</strong> price points<br />
th<strong>at</strong> people can afford. They made <strong>the</strong>ir<br />
name initially on Rhone varietals<br />
(Mourvedre, Syrah, Carignan) and<br />
Zinfandel, all of which are for many of our<br />
customers like old friends. For decades<br />
however <strong>the</strong>y have owned, farmed, and<br />
<strong>the</strong>n sold-off to major brands<br />
Chardonnay, Merlot, and Pinot Noir. Their<br />
fruit was purchased by major California<br />
players, whose brands are also household<br />
names <strong>at</strong> Surdyk’s and around <strong>the</strong><br />
country. Recently however, <strong>the</strong> Cline<br />
family committed to bottling <strong>the</strong>ir own<br />
varietals, and this is one of <strong>the</strong>m. I was<br />
frankly stunned <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> quality here, and <strong>at</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> price. And <strong>the</strong>n I considered, of<br />
course it would be high quality <strong>at</strong> an<br />
affordable price... th<strong>at</strong>’s wh<strong>at</strong> Cline<br />
does! This Pinot has dark-fruit <strong>at</strong> its core,<br />
lovely balance, an intriguing<br />
smokiness, and <strong>the</strong> lingering impression<br />
is one of immense gr<strong>at</strong>ific<strong>at</strong>ion. Often<br />
Pinots <strong>at</strong> this price lack balance all <strong>the</strong><br />
way through <strong>the</strong> finish, this one is about<br />
as perfect as I can recall. In my opinion,<br />
this wine ought to become <strong>the</strong> next<br />
big Pinot Noir in <strong>the</strong> marketplace. For<br />
now though let’s just keep this to<br />
ourselves and our good friends.<br />
