Deschutes Red Chair by Tori Hipp-Faragher (6.2% ABV, Northwest Pale Ale) For the last few years, the New Year meant Red Chair NWPA was coming back, and it has easily become my favorite seasonal beer release. A step above an average pale ale, this Northwest Pale Ale has a hop and malt balance while drinking, with a great hop finish that isn’t overwhelming. Lots of citrus notes and a floral nose, this beer will make it easy to jump back into those summer IPAs. The smooth malty body and the piney hop finish balance beautifully. The beer is an astonishing example of the best of both worlds. The hints of caramel, chocolate, and smoke will definitely leave you coming back for more of this NE Minneapolis beast. This beer’s roots run back 400 years as a bread substitute during Lent. Its hazy chestnut appearance is followed by aromas of rich caramel and bready yeast which gives the impression of sweet baked goods. The well balanced sweet toasty malts and 7.9% ABV keep you warm while being light and crisp. Today it remains the original doppelbock, and a fantastic beer to keep you in good spirits for the last bit of chill. Alpine Beer Company Duet by Tommy Saunders (7.0% ABV, West Coast IPA) A marriage of Simcoe and Amarillo hops gives this West Coast IPA its extraordinarily clean and floral character. Crisp citrus and pine flavors from the hops rest graciously on the malt backbone that provides the beer with its 7% ABV. This style of beer can be intimidating, but if you try this local brew, I assure you that it might just open the door to a whole new category of beer. Fair State Co-op’s Cromulence is a sour with a wheat beer base that has added bacteria and is then fermented in a dairy tank. This sour ale pours a golden, straw color. It is effervescent and you will notice aromas of bubble gum, banana, hay, and bread. The body is smooth and creamy. This beer is malt forward and lemony with a sour twist. The sour isn’t overwhelming and it hits you right at the finish. This beer is refreshing, drinkable, and the perfect spring choice. Exploring the World of Cabernet Tuesday, April 5 Instructor: Bill McCleary Cabernet Sauvignon is the world’s most famous red wine grape. We will sample Cabernet from various growing regions worldwide, all putting their signature stamp on the grape, and tasting them side-by-side to find out what makes each so special. There will be tasty representatives from the famed Bordeaux region of France, the delicious American varieties from Napa Valley and Sonoma County in California, and the up and coming Columbia River Valley in Washington. Odd Couples: A Pairing Experiment Monday, April 25 Instructors: Calder Michienzi & Noelle Starr Customers have asked for in depth pairing classes and we’ve decided to go beyond the typical “this goes with this and that goes with that” format. Join Calder and Noelle as they bend some minds with unusual and tasty food and beverage combinations. Red Table Meats and Lone Grazer Creamery Tasting and Pairing Tuesday, April 26 Instructors: Mike Phillips & Rueben Nilsson Red Table Meat Co. and Lone Grazer Creamery have been sweeping the country with their craft meats and cheeses, produced in our neighborhood at the Northeast Minneapolis Food Building. This team of artisans, headed by Mike Phillips and Rueben Nilsson, are giving you the chance for an in-depth tour through their world of charcuterie and cheeses, paired with some of their favorite accompaniments.
