Keep your eyes peeled for our line up of must-see films,
up-and-coming musicians and the next big thing...
star wars - The force awakens
Director: J.J. Abrams
Stars: Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac
Release Date: 18th April
It took over 30 years for a sequel to Return of the Jedi to
materialise, and until Disney bought the lucrative rights to the Star
Wars franchise, it was beginning to look like it would never happen.
To the relief of many, this is hardly a departure from the original
trilogy. There is none of the overwrought storytelling of the
prequels, and although The Force Awakens could be accused of
treading over old ground, it does a great job of capturing the magic
of the originals. There is certainly more to come, and this only
really serves as an introduction to several newer characters, none
of whom flounder. It is difficult to imagine a Star Wars fan disliking
its first incarnation of what promises to be a new era, and, perhaps
more importantly, it is not hard to see the franchise winning over
newcomers in a way not seen for decades.
Independence Day: Resurgence
Directors: Owen Harris
Stars: Nicholas Hoult, Ed Skrein, James Corden
Release Date: June 2016
Arguably the first big summer blockbuster of the season,
Resurgence is afflicted by a conspicuous lack of Will Smith,
star of the 1996 smash hit original. Returnee Jeff Goldblum is
joined by Liam Hemsworth, who stars as Jake Morrison, a US
pilot caught in the crossfire as vengeful aliens send a bigger and
badder army to conquer the Earth.
WEEZER
At first glance, a second
self titled album in the
space of eight years may
signal a severe shortage
of ideas. The subtitle of
Weezer’s tenth release
– The White Album –
hardly screams creativity
either, and singles ‘Do
You Wanna Get High’
and ‘Thank God For
Girls’ are two tracks that
could have been lifted
straight out of the 90s.
It may not be innovative,
but there are few groups
around nowadays
peddling the rough and
ready, retro grunge that
Weezer have mastered
over their 20 year
career.
