Have you always been into flowers and gardening? I’ve always loved flowers, yes. They’re just such a positive thing to send and receive, you can’t help but smile! Before this, I worked very long hours and didn’t have any time to get out in the garden. Now, it’s all I do! Setting up the shop has been great, my husband has been behind me 100%, which has really helped! Q: Where do you get all your flowers from? Believe it or not, I used to leave at 5am and pick them up from a fantastic supplier based in Norwich. They have so much choice and all their flowers come by road every day from Holland! I also like that there’s such a variety all year round with them, as opposed to having some months with lots of choice and others with not much! Their warehouse is huge and I’m also able to get all of my ribbons and wrapping from there too! Thankfully, they now deliver to me three times a week. Q: We have just celebrated Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day and Easter; what’s the next big occasion you’re preparing for? Although we’ve just finished Easter, there are still lots of beautiful spring flowers about for people to enjoy. I will continue to be making up lots of spring baskets using an array of daffodils, freesias, hyacinths and gerberas. I’ve also got my son’s wedding in August, so of course, I’ll be doing lots of prep for that! Q: What do you enjoy most about your new venture? Everyone is different! Most of the things I do are bespoke orders for people who really know what they want. I had someone in last week asking for blue roses, so I ended up spraying some white roses in the exact colour he wanted! I also had a wedding last month where all the flowers had to be a certain shade of teal! But I do also get customers who have no idea what they want, which gives me the chance to make suggestions! Q: And of course, we just have to ask what your favourite flower is... It would have to be a rose. They’re so elegant and versatile. They also come in every colour imaginable. 1. Gerberas A very popular flower, in fact the fifth most cut in the world. Being part of the daisy flower, gerberas come in many pretty colours from white to vibrant pink. 2. Hyacinths A bloom that has a very distinctive and potent fragrance. It’s a hardly cut that will last well if looked after. 3. Freesias A pleasant delicate flower predominantly cultivated in The Netherlands. Find them in a rainbow of colours from yellow, pink, red and even blue. Velvet Magazine | Apr 2016 95
