WHERE’S PEARL HARBOR?
I sat in the passenger seat as my buddy and I followed
the Olentangy River upstream. It was a December morning
in 1941, and the car offered little protection from the
cold. It had been twenty-​ one degrees the night before, and
even though the sky was cloudless and the sun was clear
and bright, our feet felt icy against the floorboards. Still,
I was as happy as I’d ever been. What was a little cold to a
twenty-​ year-​ old out for a drive in his best friend’s new car?
