“DON’T SHOW ME UP,
YOU LITTLE TWERP!”
Even though I’d enlisted for the Navy Air Corps, I had
to wait until there was room for me to begin the cadet
training program. So that’s what I did. I watched as 1942
edged by, one month at a time, and as I continued my
normal routine of working at Western Electric, my fear
of war started to fade. In its place, my mind was flooded
with thoughts of what it would be like to become an
actual fighter pilot. I had never once taken a commercial
flight, let alone piloted an aircraft, so there was a lot to be
excited about.
It took almost a whole year before I was finally called
to Ohio Wesleyan, thirty minutes north of Columbus.
